We have found these two interesting spiders in our KZN home. Any idea of what they are called?

This one I suspect may be a Rain spider

I posted these in another thread, but have not had any replies.

The first spider is a male jumping spider, considered harmless but some have been know to have some bad effects from a bite.Nothing too bad though.:)

The second spider is definitely a baboon spider.Would say it is a Harpactira sp.The pic isn't all that clear for iding to species, which even in a good pic is not a certainty:(
I have a friend that might be able to help with that:)

Hi can anyone help me ID this spider? This spider has replaced the orb web spider I previously posted before - I don't know what happened to the black/yellow orb web spider but I think she got eaten by the birds as I've been watching the black-eyed bulbuls trying to eat this one and the other two smaller ones with it (red/brown/black smaller ones)

This new spider has the following:

abdomen bigger than the head with markings on top (Grey colouring with lighter grey markings)

The web is not to be taken in consideration as I had just washed the windows and was forced to clean the webs off the windows but left this retreat - it will build anothe huge flat web along the window.

Sorry for the bad quality - I spend nearly 30 mins trying to find a good shot and this is the only one that came out clearly - damn that spider that got in the way - there's two of them with it.

EDIT: FInally got a better picture this morning with the spider hangin out of the retreat :)

THAT is definitely a baboon spider. I"ve had them coming late at nights in the house I used to live in Camperdown. They usually vary in sizes due to age - the younger ones are smaller and older ones are bigger and tougher. They are more common in houses near the bushveld. Where the house is, borders right on a private game farm where I've seen a variety of wildlife - sunbirds, porcupines, buck (Kudu I think), duikers, snakes, and the list is endless.

AND they move fast too - you have to be very quick to get a glass bottle and sweep them into the bottle. Beware, the wild ones tend to bite in defense and I've had a few attack my broom lol.

Good morning Vaalboy. My reference book tells me this is most likely the Small Baboon spider, Harpactirella lightfootii, if one can go by the very clear markings on the carapace. The book comments "this spider is the only mygalomorph in southern Africa that is venomous to man"

(Southern African Spiders - an ID Guide - Martin R Filmer, Plate 50, page 86)

Hi guys,

we've seen this spider in our bathroom twice already this week. Only at night.
It has been identified by an international website as a gnaphosid (flat belly ground spider), but we would like a local name or even more specific scientific name.

Any help would be great

Welcome to the forums Shinox! :yaya:

For the ID, which I won't be able to give, it might be handy if you provide a little more information.
Like about where do you live, what kind of surroundings (city, middle of fynbos, whatever) and such. That might narrow it down to an exact ID.

(I'll gently move this topic to the insects forum.)

Thank you DuQues.

Well we live in outskirts of the city, Gauteng. We have a big field near us, mostly grasses. Sparsely populated with trees. The spider itself is about 1cm long. Very quick

Can't think of anything else that would make identification easier.

Hi Shinox......a very warm welcome to the forums :D

Is that not perhaps a Scorpion Spider? Family Trochanteriidae

Shiny, red-brown or black. Some have pale marks on abdomen. Legs paler than body. Large, widely diverging fang bases. Body extremely flattened. Often folds a pair of legs back over body. Nocturnal. Hides in crevices and under bark.

Unfortunately, my book does not state where they occur.

It's a very scary looking specimen   I will try to find some more info for you.
