I want to buy a Nikon D90 with a good lens for wildlife photography. Which option is better in terms of quality and price? (found these on sacamera.co.za)

1. Nikon D90 with a 18-105mm VR and 70-300VR lens set (R17 800)

OR

2. Nikon D90 with a 18-55mm VR + 55-200mm VR lens set (R13 100) + Nikon 80-400mm f4.5-5.6D ED VR AF (R17 800) = R 30 900

I know that they are miles apart in price, but I want to know whether or not opting for the second option is 'worth it'? And what other options do you suggest??

I have a D90 myself and in the beginning I went for your option 1 and still has no regret about my descision, and I've been using my D90 with both those lenses for almost 1 1/2 years now.

I'm not very fond of either of the 3 lenses in your option 2, I played around with the 80 - 400mm a few times and just don't like it. It's 'old" and my Sigma 150 - 500mm does a better job. (I did a comparison test last year on another forum).

I'd say go with option 1, that 70 - 300mm is a brilliant lens for a non-pro lens, the kit lens 18 - 105mm is not bad at all. I'll use those two for now, get used to your camera and then start looking around what route you want to go before you buy a telephoto lens. I find it really helps KNOWING your gear before using a telephoto, as there are a few things to keep in mind when using the longer focal range lense.

So I took the plunge yesterday and bought myself a Canon EOS Rebel t3i. (600D) I'm very excited, but am having mild at the choices out there for lenses.

It comes with a standard-fare EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens, but I've already warned Mrs. Stark that I'd like more options while in Kruger.

My trusty Olympus SP-570 is making the trip as a backup camera and is more than adequate for that task. It has a long reach with 32x optical zoom with a teleconverter lens, so I'm not sure if I need to get a long lens for my Rebel, or if I should look for a quality mid-range.

I'm hoping to get something that allows for decent wildlife shots (action and still) that I could also use here in AZ for wildlife and sports. Without breaking the bank and causing Mrs. Stark to choke when she gets the bill.

Any suggestions, shutterbug mites? I also don't understand lens jargon just yet, so speak in small words.

And that again can also depend on how close you want to get to that cheetah , or leopard , or lion , which you see at a distance of 300 meters

The camera kit set me back $700US. I think I could talk her into an initial lens purchase in the $400-$500 range if I try hard enough. I'm seeing a few on Amazon in the $200 range (which she likes better ) but I'm not sure these would fit the bill.

Stark I have seen some very good photos taken with the 70-300 IS USM version, I think the glass has the best Image quality and that extra 50mm on the 55-250 can make a little difference!

What i find is a useful thing to do is to search the lens on Flickr, then you can see samples of what the lens can do

get the 70-300 IS USM.

55-250 is a kit lens, you would never assume excellent pictures from a kit lens. one of the guys I work with says it is an amazing lens, and for the pice you will pay, it is well worth it...

have a look of the digital picture for reviews...he is really good. as well as fred marinda (something like that).
