I would love to hear of any recent sightings of snakes in and around the camps in Kruger? What type of snake and where and when it was spotted. I am absolutely fascinated by snakes, but my luck I never get to see any.

Many thanks and regards,

:yaya: Blackmamba over the years we have not seen many snakes in Kruger in the camps or on the roads although we know that they are well represented in the Kruger. On the Facebook page I have seen a photograph posted by a visitor of a big snake in the men’s toilets 2 years ago at the Pafuri Picnic site. The person who posted the photograph did not mention whether someone was in the lavatory when the snake arrived … Blackmamba!.

We had our first proper visit to Kruger this October, and after reading comments on the forum were not really expecting to see any snakes! We did have a few snake encounters just prior to Kruger, and put it down to us being either lucky or unlucky depending on your viewpoint. Anyhow in Kruger we did have a couple of sightings, one curled round a post on a water tower at one of the picnic stops which we did get a photo of (not sure how to add on here), and one we caught the back half of sliding between the canvases of our tent while staying at Tamboti, which led to quite a restless night :-) Afraid I couldnt tell you what either were, but am hoping when I figure out how to add a photo someone might be able to help identify one of them.

We saw this chap last week between Lower Sabie and Olifants. He had just eaten something small - we thought it was probably a squirrel

about six weeks ago there was a huge python behind the Lower Sabie Restaurant kitchen - apparently it had crawled out of a pipe, killed and swallowed a monitor lizard and was then too big to take the same route it had used in the first place - a few minutes later two of the LS guides arrived and sent everybody away...we were later told that they were planning to catch the snake but as soon they got too close the python regurgitated the lizard and then, thin enough, disappeared through the pipe

There was a Mozambic Spitting Cobra in Balule during the Balule Birding bash

Here is a very nice tutorial for posting photos on the Forums Slow Mo:

How to.. Host photos for use with Trip Reports.

We saw a beautiful Mozambique Spitting Cobra at the intersection of Punda Gate Road (H13-1) and the Kruger main road (H1-8) on 14 December 2014 at 18:00. This fascinating animal stod its ground and we were happy to sit in our car.
Karsten and Julia,
Kruger 8-20 December

Me thinks I have had all the snake encounters that you all missed out on... Let me tell you about my recent ones:

About 2 years ago on a hot January afternoon (18:00 or so), I was in Orpen camps swimming pool when SO in her firmest voice said "get out of the pool"... Behind me was a puffy about the size and thickness of my arm!!!

Same trip we had a blackmamba lying across the road, in the Orpen area! What a sight!
It then started to pour down with rain, which later led to flooding, and we must have seen about 8 puffys, four or five Mamba's, boomslang, python and green mamba cross the road in one afternoon. It was obviously the rain that led them looking for higher ground!

But in general we go in January, and always come across a Mamba and a puffy, thankfully not always in the pool

Wow Inyati! you really had a lot of snake sightings! Wonderful, although I wouldn't want them close to me, like in the swimming pool for instance! That must have been very scary!

Eeeekkk Inyati swimming with a puff adder at Orpen I do not want to do. I rather sit next to the fence and watch the animals   :)

The right word to use how I felt, is not appropriate on this site, but rhymes with.... Just kidding.. Wasn't a good feeling, and also haven't been back in any pool for that matter in the park  Once bitten... :slap:

But in general, they are actually amazing to see (from a distance), and we have been very blessed with these types of sightings... Earlier this year, beginning of October, we saw a Goshawk kill a smallish black mamba... Sat for about 40 mins watching it, absolutely stunning...

Some years ago, whilst driving along,my wife suddenly said "stop , there is a two toned snake on the road back there"
I quickly reversed back to the spot and saw a Black Mamba with a partially ingested Puff Adder half way down...hence the two tones.
Unfortunately this caused the Mamba to regurgitate its meal and shoot of into the grass, leaving a dead Adder.
Last trip to Kruger (Aug14) we saw 4 different pythons, the best being in the fork of a tree near the boma at Sweni trail camp.It stayed there for 3 daysand we saw different animals approach it,but left it alone, including Genets and Monkeys.
I have a theory that the best snake spotters are those who dislike them.I love snakes but it is always my wife, who hates them, who see them first!!

In December we saw a dead juvenile black mamba in the parking area of the Skukuza Shop opposite the library.
