This is a Red lipped snake although one cannot see the orange red on the lips. But the fine white spots and the black on the head (if you look closely) identifies this as a Red lipped snake.

I think you are right. It had a black stipe behind each eye. When scared/angry it flattened its head into a wide triangle. No red lips though. Rgds Rob

The behaviour you describe fits the Red lipped snake 100%. Depending on the locality, the red may vary between yellow, white and even blackish.
