Please help me identify this snake seen in Struisbaai (near Cape Aghulhas), just off the path through the dune vegetation to the beach.

Looks like a mole snake. Typical dark cape colouration. A robust burrowing species.

thanks. did some research on my own and it definitely was a common and garden mole snake!

Mole snake ? Black Mamba (because of the smile on the head !!!)

and this one ? in Kruger around Lower Sabie, in November, injured by... a big cat ?

1. mole snake.Don't think mambas are found in the kgalagadi.
2. Olive grass snake(Olive whip snake)??

Its a big one too!!
Looks like its made of beads. Are these snakes aggressive? Can they give a nasty bite?

I am by no means a snake expert by any stretch.....

As far as I know these guys are not very agressive but can deliver a very nasty bite indeed, will rather wait for the snake experts on this forum to comment.

They're not venomous, but they can be REALLY aggressive and a bite will probably hurt a lot. They tend to bite and then twist, so you can imagine what happens if he gets hold of your arm... :shock:

But in the majority of cases that I've seen they quickly become shy and then they try to hide their heads in the coils.

Thanks for the info and compliment, So they bite with bit of a tearing action... charming! :shock:

I have a serious fear of snakes and this was by far the closest I have ever come to a live snake (I was still probably about 1 and a half meters away from him).
