Anyone know if grass carp(Ctenopharyngodon idella) have been spotted in Kruger yet? Read Here

I know there were introduced here into Florida Lake to control the water grass which at one stage was a big problem, but now seem out of control, also heard of them now being caught in the vaal(river and dam) Klipdrift dam, wemmer pan, if they are in the vaal it should be safe to say that they are also found in bloemhof dam.

if they aren't in kruger yet, they most probably will be soon/

would sanparks take action against something like this?

There was a problem with grass in the water in Bloemhof dam. When you reeled in your hook and sinker, it was always covered with heaps of grass. Then the grass carp appeared and the grass disappeared. It looks like nature has sorted itself out because I have not caught any grass carp in 3 years.

I don't think they will survive in Kruger. Too many predatory fish and crocs. Grass carp is also slow and not a good fighter.

on the bigfishsafari forum they mention not use muddies or yellow rather use carp or barbel, trying to minimize the effect on the indigenous fish species.

Recently the Environment Agency in Britain have sent several hundred mirror and common carp to African countries, for sport and, in some areas, food. Also, extensive wild stocking of brown, rainbow, brook and triploid trout is planned, especially in Botswana. :D

Grass Carp are now caught all over in the Vaal River system.

They are rapid growers and very rapid breeders.

Fish in excess of 3 kg. mass are not uncommon.

They are exotics and should be removed from the site when caught.
The first grass carp were introduced to control the growth of water grass, they were thought to be sterile, therefore they would not breed in our waters.

They have found our systems suitable and now are becoming a threat to the indigenous species i.e Yellow Fish, even the numbers of Mudfish seem to be declining, possibly also due to pollution which in turn does not seem to harm the Grass Carp, they seem to flourish in the current conditions.
