I have been to the parks on many an occasion and the only time I have seen a snake is either when it is crossing the road or  road kill  .
If you were exploring the parks by vehicle @ the regulated speed of 40km what advice could you give me for spotting a snake in the bush ?

Or would we class it as being..in the right place at the right time ?

It always is....
But instead of cruising around @40 why not look for a nice spot, and stop there for a while? Switch all engines, fans etc off, relax, and see what pops along?
That snake might be swimming next to you, or curled up around a branch...

Snakes are VERY difficult to see, even when you are out in the bush walking. The best way for spotting is either in the road or by listening to the birds. Most birds (drongos, orioles, puffbacks, etc) go crazy when they spot a snake in a nearby tree. They normally reveal mambas, boomslang and vine snakes (and other arboreal snakes), but it also works well for finding owls and other cats in daytime.

But you don't often find snakes. I normally aim for 1 snake a day when we are out in the bush (walking mostly). But even then, I seldom reach my goal over a long period, and it often consists of a split second sighting of a mamba or sand snake disappearing into the bush at high speed!

Found KTP the place to see Cape Cobra.
Seen 3 on one trip

But being at the right time/right place is always important
Saw a phyton at Nkulu sleeping in the reeds 3 yrs ago.

Snakes are easy to spot on colder days. Just park here and there, and open the enginecompartment from time to time...

Duco these srea truly amazing. Did u get rid of them somehow?

Please also could you tell me how you are posting your pics. I have reached a stage now where I can only see about 2% of those posted, yours being amongst them. Shadowdog, Tilandi and Caezar absolutely nothing. Are you using something different?

So many have tried to give me advice with no success. Tinypic is blocked for me, that I know, Flickr seems to work to view sometimes.

The crazy thing is that in a batch of pics from someone, I can sometimes see one or two and not the rest eg Jen's birds for February. Can only see 3.

Have even got our IT people in. Also could not help.

Being on the Sanparks web and not being able to see pics is so TOTALLY awful!
Thanks

Jane

When passing boulders or large rocks, they are also good places to stop a while and survey with the binoculars. Good chance of seeing a python.

Best advice is to drive slower, and dirt roads offer better chances of seeing snakes. In the last 7 years I have been to the KNP, have always seen snakes of one kind or another. THough I am yet to see my first Python. Will post some pics as soon as I have uploaded them to Flickr.
Good lick next time

Noel

We got rid of the snake, it's a harmless molesnake. But fun!

And yes, I use a different server. I have a few of my own, and that makes life nice and easy for me.
