Hi

I know nothing about snakes and can probably only recognise a Cobra or a Puff Adder, so would like some help on identifying this snake that we saw recently near Bedinkt waterhole in Kgalagadi.

Thanks

Mole snake indeed! Nice pic except for some grass covering part of the face!

Pedro, that looks like an Olive Grass Snake (Psammophis mossambicus)..... not dangerous to humans but the larger ones can give a nasty bite! The only other snake it could be is the Mozambique spitting cobra but it's headshape is not right for that!

I support the olive grass snake identification. It's too slender for a spitting cobra as well.

Hi,
We saw this snake the week before last between Nkuhlu and Lower Sabie. We assumed it is a python, but it seems very dark. Is this a usual colour, or is it not well or something.

It's definitely a python, but pythons vary quite a bit in colour. If the pattern on a snake like this is not very clear, then it may indicate that the snake is getting ready to shed its skin. This one looks like quite a big one, and maybe around 3 metres in length?

Were you in one of those green tourist vans Dave? We waited patiently behind a greenie at python siting (same date and road) and only caught a glimpse of the tail when the van eventually drove off.

We were in our Silver Condor. 12th Sept about 1315. It was on the river side of the road just lying there. Jan took pics from the passenger side, I could see from the other side but difficult to photo cos it was low down.
Must have been near 3 metres, also looked like it was digesting food.
