Hi All,
I have been to KNP several times but havent come across any snakes or may be never tried spotting. This year i'm planning to go in Aug and planning to stay in Sukuza or Satara camps. Has anybody come across any encounters with the snakes in the camps and rooms. I am a bit scared as i'm taking my 1year old baby with me. Pls advise.

Thanks..... :)

Have a search on the forums, very few people have seen snakes about.

I find that snakes are a disaster. I want to photograph them, but they run away way too fast, especially the mamba's.

I saw many... but the chance to have pictures and video of a huge Puff Adder
and some blurry of a Black Mamba... because of the fast, I "strafe" the road... no time for focus
and some other

Pws-A warm welcome to the forums.
Anne-Marie is right, chances of seeing snake in winter months are much less than in summer, though I have seen snakes in the July and August when I have been in the Park. The further north you go, the more the chances increase in winter as it is still hot enough for snake activity. Have not read much of a snake being found in the chalets on this forum at any rate, though there was one with the boomslang which I recall. There is simply too much activity at teh chalets to make it viable for a snake to move in. I would'nt stress too much-keep to the simple rule of raising children-especially when they are at that age-starting to crawl/walk-never leave them out of your sight. And do what I do-you can call it paranoia-I do a quick reconaisance of the chalet/tent-under the bed, at the back of the fridge and cupboards etc-specifically for snakes (though others also look for spiders and bats) but even that is no guarantee. I own a snake (or rather I look after my son's pet snake) and it is amazing how these reptiles can get themselves into places, around objects and camouflaged.

I have only seen a snake once in a camp-in Skukuza-a harmless spotted tree snake and that is after more than 30 years of going to the park (with a 10 year break in between)
Also remember snakes are more interested in getting away from humans and only pose a threat if they "feel" they cannot escape.

Enjoy your trip - remember to wear the yellow ribbon on the mirror of your car. There is a chance I may be there too in August.

Cheerio

Any other photo Wildheart? Any idea of the length? That snake could be any one of possibilities: Cobra, mole snake, brown house snake, black mamba. A lot of snakes excluded by virtue of the mono-colouring.

Wildheart this chap could be one o the whip snakes formerly Sand Snakes and Grass Snakes.

My reasoning is that there is no gloss for it to be Mozambique, the color and thickness is not right for a Snouted Cobra, teh head you can see is is almost rounded so it would rule out Mamba. The size says no to Boomslang as if this were Boomslang it would be juvenile and then a two tone color.

The long tail also rules out the cobras n mamba.

A mole Snake would be a lot fatter than this guy and the flash you say would aslo point to Whip Snakes
