Hi all!

I was driving along the circular in TMNP about a month ago, and came upon a black snake catching some sun on the road just before the fork toward Gifkommetjie. I dont have a picture , but would hope to find out what some of you guys think it was.

It was about 1 and a half metres long and quite thick, possibly as thick as a Cape Cobra (which i was lucky enough to come to within a metre of while walking on the coast near Venus Pools!) and very docile. Another car stopped just before us, and the driver wondered out loud if it was a black mamba. As far as i know there arent any black mambas on the peninsula, and black mambas are not fully black.

This snake was fully black, and had a fairly small head.. Can anyone hazard a guess as to what it was?

Reading your description, I am 100% sure it was a mole snake. They are very common on the Peninsula.

I agree with Stoffel. I have seen many black mole snakes around the peninsula.

Hi can any one identify on way out of Mopani

Unfortunately the picture is not sharp enough for me to identify the snake. I can just say that it may be a Grass/Sand snake, or even a Black mamba. As I say, I cannot give a positive ID from this picture. Just a guess by looking at the shape of body and head. Sincerely, Agama

You don’t possibly have a closer shot (or crop) of the head?
Another possibility, apart from the ones Agama mentioned, is a female Boomslang.

well, yes, Batmad it is a big one. Better watch out, it may get your bats

I do not think that is a snake. The proportion, length vs girth looks wrong. BUT, there is a cam picture of a nice huge python I have seen before on the forums.

Now where do I find it? Will go and have a look.
