Morning

Would someone be able to tell me what the different types of tortoises are that you find in the Kruger?

Do you only find the leopard tortoise or is there more types?

Also believe there is the Spekes Hinged Tortoise but can't ever recall seeing it.

Lourenco, if terrapin's are included in your enquiry, Kruger is said to have:
Spekes Hinged Tortoise
Pan Hinged Terrapin
Serrated Hinged Terrapin
and the Leopard Tortoise

We saw these two guys on our last visit:

I thought I'll ad these turtles with the Tortoises.

On one of the roads along the Olifants river, dont have map with me, we stopped at a pool of water next to the road. There were allot of turtles inside the pool even a baby crock. To my surprise the turtles started climbing out of the water and actually started approaching our car! Has anybody experienced this before?





What type of turtle is this and how many types of turtles do you get in Kruger? I have never heard of a terrapin, what is the Afr. for that?

As far as I know there are three species of Terrapin in Kruger:

Hinged Terrapin (Pe sinuatus) slight knobs on the back.
Cape Terrapin (Pelomedusa subrufa) No knobs at all.
and the rare Pan Hinged Terrapin (Pelusios subniger) found south of Pafuri.

Terrapins are fresh water animals.
Turtles are salt water animals.

Thanks Wtm, so I suppose they were the Hinged Terrapin. Real friendly terra's.

I am no terrapin pro, but the slight knob on the back would also make me go with Hinged.

Could someone please help with the ID of this extremely tiny little Tortoise we saw in Kruger in Feb.

That's a Leopard!

Was it in a tree?

When I was in the Park in January, we were amazed at the amount of really tiny Leopards crossing the road.

Not unless the tree looked a lot like a sand road.

just read this thread now and i am loving it! how to ID a tortoise! they are all so cute!

You often find lots of tortoises on the roads just after rain. They come to use the puddles that collect there to "fill up."

And you are correct, it is quite an eye opener to see just how many there are.

In West Coast Nat Park the angulates and tent tortoise come out in numbers and get squished by fast traffic. When are those speed bumps gonna happen!!! this plus puffies, cape cobras, mole snakes, skaapsteckers etc etc etc etc
