Great pic's. The cobras are devious, when they hood (stand up and spread they neck flaps for the none snake people) they are easy to atleast ID as a cobra but like the cobra in pic 2 when they are down they are not immediatly ID'd.

Maybe we can get one of our snake guru's to start a post with just the basics. example: If it's rough (ridged scales) and flat it's a adder of some sort. If it hoods it's a cobra (or rinkhals) of some type.

Just a thought not a challange .

Hi again, Thanks for all your comments. Here is the snake, which crossed in front of us in Nov. 2011. At the time I put it down as a Black Mamba, but now I am not so sure. It certainly behaved like I have heard a BM does, in that it was very aggressive. As I stopped alongside, it turned around, reared up and came towards the car. Fortunately my wife had closed the window or it might have come inside. It was just about looking in the side window. I backed off and it then turned and went on it's way. It is amazing how fast a snake can travel.

Bondm, the snake you photographed is also a snouted cobra and not a mamba. They can be quite aggressive but it's normally more show. Stunning snake though!

Can someone please help with identifying the following snake for me?

It's a harmless little brown house snake (Boaedon capensis). The worst it can do is give you a fright... which can lead to a heart attack which could be fatal. So although it doesn't have venom, nor can the teeth inflict major injuries, you can still call it a DEADLY snake

I'm a little worried as it looks like that snake is in a cage. Please just a comment in general PLEASE remember you are not allowed to keep any local snakes as pets without the needed paper work.

...unless you live in KZN, where permits are only required for certain species (Gaboon adders and pythons). If you live anywhere else, find, observe, learn, and be very grateful that you still have cool animals like this in your neighbourhood!

Just worried why would you set up a "home" for a snake you don't even know what it is then it's the snakes fault when you end up in hospital?
