this is probably covered somewhere but I could not find a topic relating to it, so here goes:

why do most forum members use a pseudo name?

some other popular forums do no allow its forum members to use pseudo names for many reasons. whether one is complaining, complementing, contributing or just posting for the love it why not be transparent who you are?

Cheers!

There was this guy in the KTP who wanted to donner one of the forumites who took a picture of this him feeding hyenas. If your real name is known such threats could become reality.

Howzit AWB, yeah I hear you.

this is actually one of the reasons why on one of the very popular 4x4 club forums members must use their real names, sometimes hiding behind a pseudo name makes it easy to flame another person....

have you seen how some of the Lancruiser versus Landrover debates have gone...boy that gets really nasty sometimes and personal sometimes

Cheers!

There is another answer to using aliasses too: work!

If you could look at the statistics you would see that an enormous amount of people log in via work. Not something you want the boss to know...

If aliases are used, like on this forum, I think that people should respect them and not use the owner's real name in open forum even they know it.

Good post Daniel.Koch!!

I for one prefer using my real first name and the first letter of my surname as my user-name. The reason for using my real first name is that it is easy to introduce myself during a get together! I will just say I'm TheunsH and most will connect my user name to my real name!!

On the other hand, it's a personal choice, but to know someone as XXX on the forum and to meet him as YYY can get a bit tricky!  What do you call him/her...XXX (easy) or YYY ( )?

I agree (except for some cases where the 'mite includes their name in their signature, like DinkyBird/Dalene and Rumurut/Andy)

I agree with what you're saying Josh.
I have had pm contact with a lot of mites and I know a fair share of their real names, but if it's not in the signature, forumname etc I will never use it in the open.
Let everybody have his/ her privacy if he/she so desires.
