Opening "Beeld" and "Takealot" landing pages, <5 seconds each
Opening article on Beeld website, 7 seconds.
(not terribly fast, but bearable)

Opening the "Health24.com" landing page, <1 second
Opening the peer forums on "Health24", <1 second

...
So the problem must be SANParks's side, in my opinion...

Hi,

Yes, the problem "could" exist on SANParks side, but there are various questions that need to be asked and comparison done.

Top ones: what internet connectivity do you have, who is your ISP, what are the ping times and traceroutes to the SANPark site.

Comparisons: Where are the other sites hosted, from my knowledge they are hosted in SA, where the forums (SANParks site) is hosted in the US due to the exceptionally large amount of bandwidth we use on a monthly basis (2TB+).

What I would suggest is to do the following: Ping www.sanparks.org and trace route to www.sanparks.org then email those to me and I will take a look - ISP sometimes have partnership peering with upstream providers and you for example might get routed to UK, Far east then US, or you might get routed to US but not to the US node that we use.

How do you time this loading? Are you using a add-on or something from your browser?

For example:

Loading private messages:
639.4 KB (536 KB from cache)
8.17s (onload: 8.28s)

Given my explanation to the post above and the fact that the server is in US, and this is from a corporate network - those speeds are acceptable according to world standards.

Then further tests: from a normal residential land line ADSL account, onload: 7.26s and then a further reload 6.56s based on caching.

I can ask this as I know for a fact that the server has a timeout setting of two minutes, that if a page does not load the connection (thread) is terminated so that the server resources do not get bogged down with "dead requests", the only server capable of letting a load time of that occur is a streaming web server such as youtube.

ok, this is getting way too technical for me

I timed (using my wrist watch) from when I clicked on a link until the page appeared fully-loaded on my screen, and I could scroll up and down.

I've no idea how to "ping".

Since SANParks.org is hosted in the US, this probably explains the slow response time - before I chose sites that I know are "South African" sites on purpose because I thought I was comparing "apples" to "apples", turned out not to be the case though ...

The forums are still too slow for my liking, but now I know to blame the appalling amount of bandwidth available between SA and the rest of the world ( :evil:

)... and not SANParks...
Pity thought, that SANParks does not have a mirror site hosted in SA for the okes on this side of the ocean....

We can do that no problem, the local SA mirror, we just need a funder with loads of fluid income, when I say loads, I mean loads

I know some users from places where adsl is non existent or connections are bad use the mobi version of the forums, will that not work for you?

I have not been visiting the Sanparks forum very much during the last year, but the speed has got even worse. It must be the only SA site to use this USA host, because it is the only site that I have been visiting ( and they are quite a lot) that takes minutes to load and often is not even available. Saturday and Sunday were unacceptable and this evening it is not kidding either. I am only visiting the bird forum, but this inefficiency make you loose the desire to do something even if you really like it :evil:

From abroad you cannot use the mobile site.
