So we finally managed to get to take some time of work and a booking at Tamboti.

The only thing that is worrying me is that SO is pregnant and I don't want to take any risks for her and the baby while we visit Tamboti, is November a high risk time, I've done some research and apparently November is not a high risk time. (http://www.krugerpark.com/malaria.htm and http://www.sanparks.co.za/parks/kruger/ ... alaria.php).

We will talk to the GP before we decide to go, are there any anti malaria drugs that are safe for use during pregnancy? SO will also be wearing protective clothing and repellents will be used.

Any advice would be appreciated... thanks.

This is always a difficult one. :hmz:

When I read May-November, to me that means "to, but not including November", so I would certainly have reservations if you are going in November with a pregnant wife.

Also with the odd climate changes world wide these days, the SA weather is not so predicable as it used to be.

Last year we were in Phalaborwa in November and had very hot weather quite a lot of the time.

Also several members have reported increased numbers of mozzies recently, thought that was around the Shingwedzi area.

I would suggest that you talk to your GP sooner rather than later.

Oh dear that all sounds so negative, and maybe I'm being over cautious, but that is how I see it.

I'm sure others here will disagree with me, and at the end of the day, the decision must be yours and your wife's.

Good luck deciding...........and if you do go, hope you have a wonderful trip.

I just thought this is an interesting topic. We love KNP and we usually end up going throughout the year.the only thing that always puts doubts in our mind is the malaria issue.personally I have never heard from anyone I know that has contracted malaria in KNP.i know it is a malaria risk area but I want to find out how serious it is.
I heard Sanparks spray DDT to help prevent malaria don't know how true it is.I know it takes 1 mosquito to pass it on but just thought it is interesting to know.
Have you or anyone you know contracted malaria in KNP?

Well I'll start the ball rolling with a "NO". I personally have not heard of anyone who has contracted malaria while staying in Kruger, but many people take anti malaria precautions, to make sure that they don't!!

If you are feeling unwell after a visit to Kruger, then you should not hesitate to see a dr and to mention to him that you have been in a malaria area.

Chances are small, but better safe than sorry.

I have heard of people getting Malaria, but didn't know them personally.
in fact Bruce Bryden a Kruger Park ranger for many years and author of a wonderful book, succumbed to it years after leaving the park and while on a fishing trip in Mozambique.
There is a lot of great info and advice Malaria and another long topic Here

The wife of a former moderator and the mother of another forumite have both contracted malaria while in KNP.

Unfortunately for me I got it twice as a kid. 1991 and 1999. Both times was due to a visit to our favourite park. Both times we used the prescribed meds and both times the doctors battled to diagnose malaria first time round. The first time round I was even wrongfully treated for something else. Both times resulted in prolonged hospitalisation. Both times was equally horrible. That said, in the past 14 years we still go to Kruger every chance we get. We do however take exceptional precaution. I tend to overuse every repellent possible, smoking up a storm with coils outside and I make sure to 'cover up' from 4pm to 9am. So far so good. But as in the previous posts said, when you've been in a malaria area and feel even slightly ill, go to the docter tell them and hopefully they diagnose it correctly first time round.

Yes I got malaria once in 2000.

We stayed in croc bridge and pretoriuskop during November. Two weeks after our stay I got flue like symptoms, that became so bad that I went to the doctor.

I got my antibiotics that same day. It is by far one of the worst sicknesses I ever had.

Myself and my SO also got poisoned by a batch of Mefliam anti malaria pills, that was even worse than malaria.

Best is to take enough precautions, rather safe than sorry.

Lepardfan that must have been aweful? I have my own opinions about taking those meds. I'm no medical doctor and therefore won't raise my opinion on that. Carol g, as long as you stick to the few basic known precautions you'll be fine. I'm no expert but I know those mozzies buzz silently around before sunset until a bit after sun rise. Lower joints are a preferred spot for them, hence the cover up rule, and they don't like citronella oil, I tent to apply this liberally lol. I was also told not to wear or use any fragrances based products, even shampoo. Luckily there are tons of 'plain' versions of everything.

Thanks for the advice RemiE, didn't know about not using fragranced products

I didn't know that for many years either Carol, then someone enlightened me!!!

I love to wear perfume, but have trained myself not to do so when in a malarial area.

Thanks for the responses
I am aware of Bruce Bryden, read his magical book :D
Was just wondering of people like myself visiting the park
Is anyone aware of the DDT spraying in KNP?
Heard they started spraying around 2006, if it is true anyone that has contracted after that?

We put on long pants and long sleeve t shirts after 4pm and we spray our ankles, arms necks with anti mozzie spray, we sleep with a fan on, we also burn large sandalwood sticks (I purchased them from a 4X4/outdoor dealer) outside our accommodation as soon as the sun starts setting, so far so good.......... :hmz: :hmz:
