I am looking for ideas as to how to keep ice for as long as possible - in fact for 4 days.
We are going camping at Easter, we don't have a portable fridge, there are no fridge facilities but i would love a cold gin & tonic at the end of the day.
Some one said you can mix salt with the water into the ice containers - it will last longer?

Adding salt will make it harder to freeze, and easier to thaw actually.

You do know that you can buy bags of ice in the shops, or from the new vending machines?

In that case make sure you have an as large as possible mount of cold packs and ice as possible together. The larger the mass the less quick it melts.
And of course open the the bag/box as little as possible. ;)

I cannot help you with the gin and tonic, but if you are taking meet get it vacuum packed (once thawed il will keep longer) and deep frozen and then wrap it up in layers of newspapers. You can put the gin and tonic (the gin right from the freezer and the tonic from the fridge) in between

Ok. Here is one from "ancient times.

Take about 14% sawdust and 86% water and freeze it as hard as possible.

The sawdust in the ice will cause reduced thermal conductivity which will extend the melting for an extended period of time.

Dry ice will work.

Look online for places that sell it.

Remember large chunks defrost slower than small blocks. Freezing a 2 litre plastic cooldrink bottle is quite effective as it keeps the water contained.

You can also wet men size knee length socks and put the bottles in those, just keep wetting them. Will keep the bottles cool.

Woodsy, I agree with you, we freeze water in 5l wine bags, when they do "defrost", there is no water in the cooler box and they stay frozen for ages. Also remember not to open the cooler box frequently, we have one cooler box for drinks and then one for meat.

:k Hi I think I think I should have taken the name tent dweller ,I could easily live in a tent in the wild for all time , however back to the cooler ,freeze the bags as small or large as you want or as they fit in your box and also have water if you travel to places where drinking water is scarce :D :D :D :D :D :D

At KTP we could rent a vehicle with a freezer/fridge. Does anyone know of this option for Kruger? Thanks.
