CAN YOU HIRE/ORDER A PROPER SPARE WHEEL?

Unread postby Elephantears » Wed Aug 14, 2013 3:54 pm

Most of today's cars come with a slightly small spare wheel (donut) which is not intended to drive for long distance in them. I am not even sure they are fit for driving on corrugated gravel roads with lots of elephants dung!. In an event of a flat or damaged tyre one can, hopefully and safely, replace it with the proper size tyre and carry on to the next destination without worrying too much.
I am wondering is it possible to hire a full size spare wheel for the rented car from (Avis) and how much would it cost?
Thank you very much.

The answer is simple, NO. Enquire from the rental companies first if their vehicles have got a full size spare wheel, instead of the Marie biscuit wheels that some vehicles have.

You should be able to get a second spare but you'll probably need to order it in advance. It will be on the list of optional extras that comes with the booking form.

In January this year we discovered that after approximately 6 days of driving around Kruger that we had a puncture. I’m not sure when this occurred, and I am even more embarrassed that I hadn’t noticed this until I was alerted to the fact by a fellow motorist 10km from Olifants restcamp.

I can only hope that because of the rutted gravel roads this masked the bumpiness of the ride. I was naturally reluctant to try and change the tyre on the side of the road, and I was also unsure if this would be against park regulations, so we decided to limp back to Olifants where the very efficient mechanic pulled two screws from the tyre and repaired the puncture with that sealing gel that welds the rubber back together (you can tell from this description that I’m no mechanic!).

Anyway, as far as I’m aware there was no spare tyre with the car? I know my car in UK has no spare tyre, only a can of this sealing spray, but I wasn’t sure this was a global thing.

I could not understand how I could have driven all the way from OR Tambo airport and straight into the Kruger without noticing a puncture for nearly a week, but I also don’t believe I could have driven over two screws within KNP. If the mechanic had extracted a porcupine quill or a thorn I could have understood this, but you don’t tend to see many screws lying around in Kruger.

One lesson learned is that I’ll certainly check the pressure of the tyres and availability of a spare wheel a bit more thoroughly next time I hire a car.

(The answer is simple, NO.) Rooies, do you mean that you can't get an extra spare in SA? I have read in Namibia you can oder an extra spare wheel, I know, of course they have massive distance to travel on gravel roads.
So in Kruger if you get a second puncture, you sit and wait and hope for the best!
saraf ; there is no such in the optional extras but I have contacted and waiting to hear form Avis.
iedman; good to hear Avis has a helpful service.
I will let you know all how I got on when/ if I hear from Avis.

Hi all,

I usually rent a Fortuner from Avis as it has a nice high ride and enough space for 3 adults.

For January 2014 the Avis price has almost doubled and I am looking at R25000 for 18 days.

On addition to the high price I also have a fourth adult joining me and am not sure the Fortuner will be big enough or comfortable.

In the past I have rented a VW Kombi and a H1. Whilst the H1 was bigger the Kombi was more comfy. Both of them were problematic regarding the rear windows. The opening mechanism was PAINFUL (sliding) and very small.

Here the large opening rear windows of the Fortuner assist better with Photography.

Does anyone know of a LARGE vehicle with excellent opening rear windows that allow for large lenses to poke through? As well as a vendor that may be a little more competetive regarding price?

All advice is gratefully received!

Does anyone know if the VITO has opening rear windows that open wide?

Regards,

Sean

Rent a 4x4 in/ Hoedspruit; possible?

Unread postby pixelpower » Tue Nov 19, 2013 1:18 pm

Hey all,

I'd like to hire a double-cab 4x4 for a self drive in Kruger. But when I Google for this, I get all sites from Jo'burg or CT etc. But I need mine in Hoedspruit, as I'll be at the private reserves near Kruger, prior to starting my self drive.

Anyone know any addresses of companies who can provide me with what I need?

Actually, I wouldn't mind an open vehicle either. I know it needs a canvas roof top, and I know you need to get a permit at SANparks head office. I should be able to get the permit as I'm FGASA/CATHSSETA registerd. But this type of vehicle gets rented even less, so it's not to be found on the web (although I'm sure there must be companies renting them out, but I assume it's more a business-to-business thing).

Thanks!

J.

I believe a 4X4 is not needed in Kruger . just a nice high clearance vehicle none of the roads are that bad!!!
A doubt whether they will allow a n open vehicle in Kruger to a private person but i am no expert in such things and i may be wrong

Hi Pixelpower,

Have a look at this topic............. Game viewing vehicle

It does seem as if it will not be possible for you to enter the park in such a vehicle.

So a normal Double cab 4X4 it will have to be for visiting the Kruger.

Yes I did.

I get plenty of big companies renting out regular cars (like Budget Car & Avis), but none of these rent out double-cab 4x4's. Like a Toyota Hilux or something.

There's also some websites of the type of company I'm looking for (ic that rent out 4x4s, equiped or non-equiped). I find them because they managed to smuggle "Hoedspruit" into their key words. But then if yo look closer, it says that pick up / drop off is in Jo'burg.

Thanks Stark. I've tried Europcar but their web page says there's none to be had. I sent them a mail anyway.

@Elsa; thanks as well! I sent Britz a mail. Perhaps pick up & drop off at Hoedspruit is not a problem for them. Will try Thrifty as well.

Update; no love from Thrifty.
