Car rental I can't help you with as we are lucky to live close enough to use our own vehicle. Maybe DuQues and Madach may be able to help - I gather you two use a Toyota Condor on your trips?

I've rented a Condor for my trip in March. I payed around R7000 for a 16 day rental. I've used a number of companies for car bookings, but the last couple of years I've been using RJCM Travel. You can contact Wayne Rogers to get a quotation.

2. Anyone have any tips on the best deal on car rentals? We are flying into Nelspruit and want to get a Toyota Condor (er something like it). The month long rental is about what my car here cost!!!

There are 6 car rental companies at the airport.

I would ask them for a price quote. They usually reply within a day.

Thanks,
I checked all of the car rental places at the airport. It is complicated as the quotes are all slightly different (unlimited mileage - 100 K a day - insurance - super insurance,etc.). They all come out around $2,000 (US) for 28 days. Whew! That seems like a heckuva lot of money. I was hoping that someone might know of some super deal, but I think that was just wishful thinking. We can get a smaller economy car for considerably less, but as this is The Trip of My Lifetime :D I want something that will get us up a bit higher.
Sighhhh.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I do appreciate it.

2000 USD for a Condor on Super Cover and unlimited milage for 28 days sounds about right. It's a lot of money, but having a car which is high up will be nice to have in Kruger. Another thing about the Condor is fuel consumption...you'll only get about 10 kilometers to a liter from it :( (I haven't got a clue what that is in miles to the gallon).

We've always looked for that elusive bargain too, ILM. Unfortunately, I don't think they exist, where car rental is concerned in SA! The best deal we have come up with for our forthcoming trip in May is £750 for 16 days for a Nissan X-Trail (we also want to be higher up and also do some of the 4x4 trails in the parks). Hiring a Landie for our wedding/honeymoon last October cost over £2000 for 16 days, but it was fully safari-equipped and had to have extra insurance to go into Mozambique. Great vehicle but it wasn't worth that much!

There is a place where you can BUY a camper then sell it back to them after 3 months. When I was hoping for a longer stay in SA, I thought about that. It seemed pretty reasonable.

The Nissan X's I have seen are quite a bit more than the Condor. Ditto for VW van. Forget a Landy!

I AM thinking that it is worth the extra money for a "higher" car. What do you think???

Anyone know what the price of fuel is these days?

From what I could find on the Internet it looks like the price for petrol is R4.22 at the moment with prices going up on 2 March. Source: http://www.shell.co.za/vpower/pprice.htm

Hi All,
Thanks for reading our posting. We are flying into Johannesburg in August for about a week & a half. Is it smart to just show up & self drive Kruger NP? Should we book a certain number of days at the park? How many? Should we book accommodation inside the park or outside the park? Is it all safe? The cost of hiring a car ($200/day???!!) will still be cheaper than going with a safari company? Thanks so much for any tips you have!
Julie & Jason

I just saw this post and I'm suprised that nobody is commenting on the cost you're quoting for hiring a car. I always hire my cars at this company and are very happy with their service. A decent car for Kruger (Toyota Condor) will cost you around USD 65 a day. You can rent cars from around half that price.

I'd recommend staying inside the park and booking well in advance. You could spend all your time in the park and not get bored, but there's more to see in South Africa then the Kruger National Park so I'd stay in the park for three to four days.

JSMath,

Sorry about the delay, I found what I'm paying for car hire.

For 10 days, renting a Nissan Almera or similar (automatic transmission), I'm paying R3329 thru Hertz. Of course, that's not with the "super cover," which is more, and I'm being charged a little more for 2 drivers. Hopefully this is reasonable or else I'll be red-faced  here. I think Madach's recommendation may beat mine. The Condor price Madach quoted seems to be very reasonable.

I almost got a Condor, but decided to stick (pun?) with the automatic transmission. I figure that I'll have enough distractions--remembering to drive on the left, avoiding elephant charges, trying not to drive off the road while looking for animals.

Last March I paid R440 per day on super-cover and unlimited milage. The car was a Europcar rental which I rented through the agent I mentioned in an earlier post. Working through agents is often much cheaper than booking directly at the rental companies.

I'm afraid I have no other recommendations. I've been using this agent for the last three years and have been very happy with their service. Before I always rented cars through CABS car rental. I stopped using CABS because they no longer insure their cars on gravel roads...not a good thing in South Africa in general and an outright bad idea in game parks like Kruger.

Madaches rental tip beats Avis, which i did through a dutch agent. Paid more for the famous Nissan Micra and had a own
liability of about 175 euros. Normaly a take care of that but due to the shock of the red devil i forgot

On the way back to the airport a stone hit the windscreen and it is going to cost me.

Make sure that y are fully ensured :!:

Isn't window damage exempt from liability at Avis? I rented from Avis two years ago (through an agent) and I returned the car with a huge impact of a stone on the windscreen  They weren't worried about it though because damage to windows was covered by the insurance and not subject to liability :D

My experience is that it's not possible to rent a car without some liability. Even with Europcar super cover the minimum liabilty is R4000

We will be flying into Nelspruit/Kruger airport and will need a rental car for three weeks. What rental companies do you recommend?

Thanks.
