Previously the gamerangers in KNP used horses. These days they often use motorcycles to reach areas not accessable by 4x4.

That said, I know more than a few of them which has had serious injuries and close escapes on their motorcycles! Even hitting something small and harmless such as an Impala can be verry dangerous, especially when you are alone and help is not at hand!

Bikes might be nice - but keep them out of the bush!

Reading the various books by past rangers who have worked in kruger and their comments on rangers riding bikes it appears the lions do see a bike and rider as a possible target probably due to appropriate prey size and have had a go at some of these rangers from time to time the noise did not seem to deter them.

From this they probably have good reason not to allow tourists to ride motorbikes freely in the park.
