Hi Mattib

There are many cheap radios on the market, it depends what you are looking for. Something for the kids to use around camp or something to use when driving in the park.
For the kids and of the cheapies will do but for driving around the park I use and am very happy with the Zartek 708’s. Although I have not used them I believe the 705 is also a good radio. Advantage with both is that you can add a roof mounted antenna which improves range and transmission quality substantially. http://www.zartek.co.za/ they can be purchased from Cape Union, Outdoor Warehouse, Hi-Fi Corp and others.

Cheers
B

"Zartek ZA-708 2 Way Radio

Compact, handy two-way radio with a 15 km range, making communication much cheaper and easier.

R950.00"

Do you know if this is for a single unit? That means for two radios it is R1,900?

Will check if they have stock tomorrow..

It is a single unit, so yes it will be double for a pair.

If you are buying though, get the 705 its a newer and more powerfull unit for much the same money.

Just wondering about taking a new unit into action, with no electricity at Tsenze - it seems that these radios need up to 5 charge cycles before they're 'run in'. It will have to be car charger to keep them going and not sure that will work so well?

Not that running-in was an issue with the 708's, their battery life seemed good from the start. 3 to 4 days if only on while driving (assume day time driving). But if you are concerned and have time before you leave give it its 1st charge and then leave it on over a few nights to run down (LED warns when low) and then charge it up. The vehicle charger does work well but takes longer than the mains charger. Also, if you can buy the roof mount arial, its worth it.
