This seems to be the latest project going on:

First the bit from BEELD for which I'm not yet able to find an English translation.

Did find this on the net:

Here is the not so good English translation:

Hydroelectricity in the foreseeable future be raised in the Augrabies National Park. Stakeholders already been approached and a submission to tackle the R700 million project will be done in August 2014 to the government, director Niel Theron Hydro SA said on Wednesday. proposed project will include a weir and piping water from the Orange River to a hydroelectric power station on the basis of SANParks and the Riemvasmaak Trust will result. the pipeline will be a existing gravel submitted, Theron said. "This is a road which the public currently do not have access without the consent of SANParks. Once submitted, we will repair the road. " plan to the hydroelectric power station deep underground in a divide near Riemvasmaak build and the last 100m to the water turbines may fall, but also that the project not onaansienlik in the environment. watercourse a bit further back in the Orange River. Riemvasmaak hydroelectric project will generate 19.9 MW and with another project, the Nose Mountain project, the construction starting next month, electricity to all Kakamas. The lowest river flows in the Augrabies Falls is 30 cu. m / s to 35 cu. m / s, Theron said. "We take only after this amount of water (18.5 cu. m / s) and then get the waterfall everything. Everyone says we're going to build a pond to the waterfall, but it is not true. " In every walk the river at the Augrabies Falls at 110 cu. m / s. "I realize there are people who are upset, but I do not think they understand what we want to do. We will not take away the waterfall, and it is also an industry that we are going to build. " weir of 2.5 m high above the waterfall in the river. "It will always be under water unless there is a drought," said Theron. weir is required to turn water into the pipeline to serve the power station. "All people will be able to see a substation." Tourists at the waterfall will not see it, according to a brochure. bid for the project in August 2014 submitted to the Department of Energy.

Kragsentrale in park beoog
2013-04-09 23:00
Elsabé Brits
Kaapstad.

Power station planned for Park.
2013-04-09 23:00
Elsabé Brits

Cape vTown – Hydro electricity could be generated in the Augrabies National Park.
Niel Theron of Hydro SA yesterday said that stakeholders are already being requested to submit proposals for the submission of their proposals to the Government this project of R700 million by 2014.

The planned project will include a weir and pipeline that will route water from the Gariep River to a hydro electric power station on land belonging to SANParks and the Riemvasmaak- trust.
Theron said that the pipeline will be underneath the existing restricted gravel road which the public do not have access to without SANParks permission.

The plan is that the planned hydro electric power station will be built subsurface in a gorge near Riemvasmaak in order that the water would drop 100 m onto the turbines in order not to interfere with the environmental aesthetics of the area.

The used water will then be rerouted back into the Gariep River.

The Riemvasmaak hydro electric project will generate 19,9 MW and will together with the Neusberg – project which will commence next week, supply electricity to the whole of the Kakamas area.

Theron stated that the lowest water flow over the Augrabies falls is 30 - 35 cub m/s, 18.5 cub m/s will be extracted for the power station. They will not be building a dam above the falls as currently being speculated by the public. The peak flow of the Gariep River is 110 cub m/s.

Theron said that it is understandable that people will be upset about this, but they should also understand that the Augrabies falls will not be removed and that they are not planning to build an industry there.

The weir will be 2.5 m in height and will be upstream in the river above the falls. Except for extreme drought periods the weir will always be sub surface. The weir is required to reroute the water to the pipeline supplying the power station. All that will be visible will be is a sub-station, according to information document this will not be visible to visitors to the falls.

The bid for this project is to be submitted to the Department of Energy in August 2014.

I have seen recent media coverage about the threat of the Kakamas hydrogeneration power scheme to Augrabies Falls NP. This scheme will result in a decrease in waterflow to Augrabies Falls NP with a potential negative impact on the vegetation and ecosystems in the park. Augrabies Falls NP is one of our national assets and we need to protect it for generations to come.

Are anything being done to stop this? Can the public perhaps assist Sanparks in drawing up a petition? Augrabies Falls is a national asset and while many people will support more environmentally friendly electricity, I do not support it at the expense of a national asset.
