Would you like to assist with Kids in the Parks?

Unread postby Kgalagadi Guru » Wed May 16, 2012 10:09 am

Morning all,

It’s that time of the year again where we would like to know if there are any mites out there who would like to assist with the SANParks - Kids in the Parks initiative.

People who would like to help would be asked to assist in giving talks about nature etc (Very basic), 'helpers' would join the kids on a walk (With an armed field ranger) around the area where they will be accommodated.

The only request from the P&C Department is that the helpers should be able to speak Afrikaans, since all the kids are Afrikaans.

For more detail regarding the Kids in the Parks and helping out, you can contact me via email jan.kriel@sanparks.org.

The dates we are looking for people to assist are:

27 - 31 Augustus 2012
3 - 7 September 2012
10-14 September 2012

Thanks

Hi Sandybabe

The children who come to the Kids in Parks program are all from schools in the areas surrounding KTP - communtities such as Rietfontein, Askham, Welkom, Groot and Klein Mier ( please correct me if I'm wrong here KG  ) etc - and as a result are all Afrikaans speaking - some might speak or understand a little English but all are schooled in Afrikaans and its their home language ...

Hope that helps

Hi Petra
The Rietvlei braai seems like it was years ago! Do you perhaps have some space in your car for a box for Jannie & Tsamma Land - I have a courier booked for October but if you are going up in Aug, the Kids can get their books sooner :D
Please could you pm me your details and I will arrange to drop off the books if convenient.

Just a quick hi from Twee Rivieren, in the middle of our week here with the Kids in Parks, and what a blast!!! Saw plenty of game as well like eland, cheetah, lions at the Actherlonie picnic ground, and been kept awake by them the most part of Saturday night. Waiting for the next group of kids to arrive this afternoon, and now stocking up a bit.

So as promised ( and after fighting with Photobucket this morning) here are some photos of my 2 weeks with Kids in Parks.

Starting off with some photos of Gemsbokplein - just off the lower dune road near to Auchterlonie and Kielie Krankie ... The store room and staff cabins on the left and main hall on the right .....

Image

And then the children's dorms and staff cabins .... ( nice and faaaaar away so as to lessen the noise  )

Image

And a beautiful view of the whole area from the top of the dune behind us .... main hall in foreground with the dorms in the back .....

Thanks Leanawel - took LOTS and LOTS of photos so beware :D

And some more ....

The hall ... with nice canvas and mesh windows that can be rolled up to let the air in ...

Image

and kitchen ( aka slave quarters    ) at the other end ....

Image

And the quad between the staff cabins and the hall with the loos and the generator hokkie on the far left... The genny was only switched on for an hour or less in the mornings and for a couple of hours in the evenings when it got dark - basically so we could see what we were dishing the kids up for supper and to make sure we didn't spill it all down the front of our shirts

Image

I met up with Henriette early on Monday morning and we drove up to GBP in convoy .... we unpacked and sorted out the hall etc and then she left to go back to TR and meet the bus, leaving me to wander around freely taking photos
