A bunch of forumites did give Frank a brand new pair of binoculars and a copy of SASOL 3rd edition a couple of years back and also to the guy at Hippo Pools. Can't remember how long ago it was maybe 3 years. The gear should still be in good conditions so maybe another bird title or stuff for his camera.

Believe it or not it was late 2005-early 2006, so about 5 years ago (doesn't time fly by). I saw the SASOL book last Oct and believe me its had some use over the years :D.

I'll order a Sasol for him, that's always a handy book. And he indeed uses it a lot, so it's probably falling apart by now.

I might be able to find another Sasol 3rd ed at a discount. Prepared to donate it (if I find one) to any guide.

I must be honest, last time I was in Kruger I used my Kruger Roberts almost exclusively. Was great having a much smaller choice of potential birds (and more precise distribution maps).

Does Frank have some facility for bird calls? Maybe some PDA software or CDs? Does he need them?

Just a word of caution on this issue is that you carefully discuss any combined effort of getting stuff to a person like Frank. Individual efforts done in "secret" is fine but on 14 Febraury 2008 it was made clear by SANParks that they will not tollerate "collection" debates like this on the Forum. At that time we were discussing binoculars for Phanny at Shingwedzi and also having him trained as a Bird Life guide.

And a big no-no is clubbing funds together to get something like this done.

So be careful how you discuss this one

In that case I'll get a copy of the Roberts Birds of Kruger Field Guide for him, you can't have too many field guides. :D

Francois, I remember the debates. Point noted.

I saw Frank this morning, and will be going back to see him a couple more times this week.

I do think this topic should be moved to Wild Projects, and fall under the VHRs. All donations to him will have to be done through them.

Andy, any of the VHRs will gladly, and thankfully receive your generous donation - thank you!

I will be back middle of Oct if you can wait until then?
