A lot has been reported about the bad behaviour of some visitors to our Parks and much has been done by SANparks employees and others to change the situation. However, there doesn't seem to be any improvement; maybe a more positive approach is needed. My suggestion is that SANparks, through the HR's, develop a simple bumper/window sticker which reads:
"I promise to abide by the Park rules and etiquette" or words to that effect. These stickers can be given (or sold at a nominal price to fund HR projects) to each vehicle on entering the Park or when checking in at the first camp. The occupants of each vehicle carrying this sticker will have obviously committed themselves to obeying the rules and regulations. Hopefully a lot of visitors will be prepared to carry this sticker for the duration of their visit and this would then send a subtle message to the minority who don't care. Some visitors, of course, will not want to or be allowed to place permanent stickers (e.g: hired vehicles) and therefore the stickers should be removable if and when necessary.
These stickers would be a constant reminder to all to respect and care for the flora and fauna - as well as fellow visitors.
Questions to SANparks management and fellow mites:
Do you think that this will help?
Would it be practical?

Another great Idea   PNF
Not sure on the costs, but perhaps the decals could be made of that thin magnetic material, and therefore could be used on the hire cars and then removed for people's family cars when they return home!...Just a thought :D

I would think that most of the visitors to the parks that cause chaos would be foreigners? Correct me if I'm wrong.

We were at Addo on Sat/Sun and some idiots were driving like maniacs then screached to a halt at Hapoor dam only for all of them to get out of the car and take photo's of the ellies. The were definately tourists as they were speaking italian or spanish.

They then climbed back in the car after about 5 min and drove about 200m up the road following the ellies and stopped and climbed out again. Then back in and back to the dam and out again!! My nerves, what part of drive slowly and do not get out of the vehicles did they not understand?  :wall: I was hoping a lion would sneak up on them from behind.......

Anyway we had a great trip to Mountain Zebra for 2 nights and Addo for a night.

Hello...foreigner here...not really sure we can generally blame anyone group for the bulk of the infractions in the park. There are idiots everywhere.
I think the liklihood of people misunderstanding the rules, should they care to align with them, is greater in people who don't speak or understand english. When faced with a large listing of rules, they may be overwhelmed and just choose not to bother with the effort of figuring it all out.
In that light, although I think a bumper sticker awareness program would be a very good 'reminder' to those who visit parks to remember the rules, it would be most effective to have more of a pictorial display of the rules in simple form on this sticker. To prevent a sticker that wound around your entire car, perhaps a few of the most frequently broken rules could be highlighted. ie staying in your car/ not speeding etc I believe that may be most effective in getting everyone to understand what they should and shouldn't do in a park.
Your thoughts?

Another visitor here, and who's seen both locals and tourists of all tribes behave the same way.

PNF this is a good idea and I have a few other thoughts to consider....can't remember, but are the rules translated into any other language? Might that help?
Perhaps the stickers could be offered for a donation, instead of a flat fee. Thus allowing the purchaser to offer what they feel able to afford, or perhaps be even more generous than whatever fee might have been decided upon. Monies could be added to the coffers of the parks.
The stickers could be park specific...although that probably adds to the cost of production...however park specific stickers could be a 'collectors item'. Not that there are many competitive people out there...ha...but that may be a challenge to some to visit more parks. Yes, that would work for me, although I will do that anyway.
Then there is the issue of those people who do understand the rules yet who feel above the rules...cover 'em in honey and leave at the garbage dump for the bears...oops, not very constructive nor SA oriented, yet amusing.
Let's concentrate on the positive action of the sticker, trying to encourage all to follow the rules.

PNF, it is so great to see people coming up with positive suggestions rather than just complaining.

My mom always said you get more 'flies'/results with honey, than vinegar, although my honey suggestion was probably stretching that addage. snicker.
I think this sticker idea is a great idea PNF and I am all for getting this to be effective. We all want the same objective...to make the parks a safe environment for all who live in and visit them.

I agree with the idea of stickers. I think it would go a long way to educating the visitors both local and foreign.

I also agree that it could be a language issue. Perhaps it could be an idea for Sanparks to include these warnings at the gates etc in two or so foreign languages.

Apologies to all the tourists that do abide by the rules. No doubt our own also trangress. I was just going by what I witnessed over the weekend.
