Been trying to ident the following butterfly. It looks a lot like the African Monarch, but is different (female version?)

Image

The image is not very crisp, taken from quite a distance on the S21 in Sept '09.

Any help appreciated
Mike

Hi Mike,

Your photograph is definitely not of an "African Monarch". It is a "Broad-bordered Acraea" (Acraea anemosa). If you are interested in butterflies then I recommend that you obtain a copy of the "Field Guide to Butterflies of South Africa", by Steve Woodhall. This Acraea can be found on pages 90 and 91.
I hope this info is of use to you.

Thanks Unrho,

Much appreciated  and thanks for the tip on the book. I'll have to look into that one.

Thanks again, Mike
