At well over 800 butterfly species in South Africa it is well worth being able to identify them.

Any recommendations as to a good field guide for butterflies?

Moira de Swardt, consider:

@ Yolandé Oelsen, I agree with the butterfly ID. Maybe this is the start of yet another interesting passtime for you, Yolandé!

Here's yet another butterfly that I need ID help for. Again seen in my garden in Darling in October 2011.

Can anyone help with an ID for these butterflies? Are there two (or even three) different sorts? Seen at Marakele on 10 April 2012.

arks,
The most obvious bfly shown is Junonia hierta, common name "Yellow Pansy". The orange one to the right is very difficult to see the entire underwing, but look at Byblia ilithyia, common name "Common Joker or Spotted Joker" and see what you think. (The vague brown one....can't tell, sorry.)

WoW, Africat, thanks!

I googled a bit and I think that the 'vague brown one' is the female yellow pansy :D

Can anyone help with an ID for these two butterflies? The first I think may be a brownveined white?

Hi arks,
I believe the last one is Colotis eris, commonly known as Banded Gold Tip. Thanks for sharing!
