Hi everyone. I have just read through the whole thread and have not seen an answer, hope i didnt miss it. Whats the best gate option going to shingwedzi (travelling from joburg), punda or phalaborwa, or even pafuri? We are planning on leaving jozi at around 05:00 with a sedan only and two young kids (2 and sub 1 years old).

Thanks in advance.

From what I can ascertain from my map, it looks like Phalaborwa gate to Shingwedzi is 140kms and from Punda Gate, around 79 I think it was, so you would need to calculate how much time you save by travelling outside the park to the Punda Gate.
But either way a long trip ahead of you especially with little ones in the car.

This is always going to be a matter of personal choice, but I personally would enter throught Phala gate, and travel up to Shing.........at least you are driving in the park!!

Good day
We will be travelling from Nelspruit airport to Numbi gate via the R538 in a week's time. Any update on the road conditions etc would be much appreciated.
Thanks

From Sanparks:
Due to poor road conditions and repairs taking place on the R538 (between White River, Numbi Gate and Hazyview), guests are advised to avoid this road and Numbi Gate. The R40 (leading directly from White River to Hazyview) is recommended as it has recently been repaired and guests can access or exit the Park via the Phabeni or Kruger gates. I was informed that this is still the situation.

Last week, I read some posts about protests at the Kruger gate, and that is was closed. Maybe someone can provide an update about the protests at Kruger gate?

Thanks ctm7943, we will be staying in Pretoriuskop, so Numbi gate would have been ideal. Will make a plan to use one of the other gates. If anyone travelled on the R538 recently, please let me know.

Hi Bushdancer, we exited Numbi gate last week and found it to be as it has been for some time. Pot holes all around - but - if you don't mind slowing down for 5/10 km or so I still find it the preferable to Kruger or Phabeni gates. There is some upgrades of the road taking place so traffic may be an issue at times, perhaps an extra 5 minutes at worst. Driving carefully and avoiding any dangers would not add more than 5/10 min to the journey. My pick would still be Numbi.

Hi,Bushdancer.
We used the Numbi gate last December. Yes,it is in poor condition but perfectly drive able with care.
What concerns me is the "unrest" which can arise at any time and the turn off the R538 to the R569 has lost its sign,so unless you know this route you could easily miss this turn.(this was the case last December).
We are in KNP in 3 days time and I am going to use Phabeni.
Cheers.

i'm presuming all reports stem from the direction of White River up to Numbi via the R538.

My question is how is the road like from Hazyview to Numbi, i.e. has anyone taken the R40 to Hazyview and then backtracked the 10 odd km's to the Numbi turnoff? Its a lot less time and distance spent on the R538.
No one has used this alternative?

Hi we have decided to avoid the roadworks on the N4 and enter Kruger via Phabeni Gate. From here we have to drive down to Biyamiti. When we get near to Biyamiti on the S114 can we turn onto the S136 or do we have to go around via S119? Is the S 139 one way? thanks all

You can get onto the private S139 Biyamiti road from just over the weir.
Its a 2 way road.
