The road to Numbi is terrible and I an quite shocked to see the flippant comment about a rental car going anywhere - sorry If I upset anyone but this type of comment comes from those who typically don't care about others. Surely you would want a rental car that has had some care - you are going to depend on it.

I travel the R40 at least twice a week and I have use the Numbi road at least once a month - and IMHO it is lousy.

I think that the time it takes to go via Phabeni is not much more than the Numbi Road - the trip from White River to Hazyview is about 40 mins and is good. Distance 48KM - and then 10 KM to Phabeni.

Unrest is currently over but can flair up any time and there is normally no notice given.

Have a safe trip and look after the rental car - remember your safety depends on it

So, to add fuel to the fire in what seems to be a contentious subject, HOW ACCURATE ARE GOOGLE MAPS DRIVING TIMES? They predict 6 hours 50 minutes from OR Tambo to Talamati. Accurate? Optimistic? Overly cautious? What do you think?

May I also add my 2 cents...just did the trip to Hazyview. From JHB to Hazyview (from when we cleared the traffic jam at Gilloolys) took us 5 hours and 30 minutes. And traffic was OK. No way this is "an easy 4 hours"

I Agree. Its a good 5 hours at least to Phabeni gate, if you stick to the spped limit and take only a short break to fill up the cars tanks and empty your own :D
Many people (including my SO) say 4 hours, but although it can be done its doing 130km/hr all the way and no stops

+1 on this. I drove 5 and a half hours and stopping at Alzu for about 20 minutes from Northgate - Joburg to Kruger Gate.. Cruise control on 125kph.

We arrive at 12 so it will be a bit tight, will make the decision whether to go up to Orpen when we are there but would prefer to drive through the park....

Unquestionably the R40. There are big signs at the R 538/R40 junction advising motorists to use the R40 as the R 538 is under reconstruction (will be until June 2015).
From KMIA turn right when you leave the airport, then left at the T-junction (D5182?) then continue until you reach the T-junction with the R40 (about 9km), then turn right, go through White River and stay on the R40.
Note that the suggested route on Google maps takes you to intersect with the R 538, even the bits leading to the R538 are pretty bad (did that route to the airport from Hazyview yesterday, and "my" route suggested above on the way back).

Josey, not sure on your distance in kilometers but we seem to average 100 km an hour including brief stops for petrol etc.
These days with so many roadworks, it can take longer.
The Garmin which gives ETA is always updating it to a later time!

A quick update on our recent travels:

R71 from Polokwane to Tzaneen is now free of road works and was a pleasure to drive (except fuel warning light came on and we spent 30 minutes at a very friendly Toyota dealership in Tzaneen having our fuel filter replaced!!).

Travelling back from Punda Maria we went via Giyani on the R81 to Polokwane - again very easy and mostly a good road. The few potholes were being fixed.

H Hansie11,

I have done this road middle March and it was fine. Just make sure you stay on the R71 (recently upgraded) and stay off the R528 turning right from Haenertsburg towards Tzaneen, this road have a lot of really bad potholes. I made the mistake to drive this road in the night.

Hi Wildthing

I do remember that a bridge on the Mara route had been washed away during the march floods. Anybody know if it has been repaired?
