Div, if I was you, I would have travelled Belfast, Dullstroom, Lydenburg, Ohrigstad, Blyderiver, Klaserie road. In the past, I have travelled the Bushbuckridge road, but everytime it was very busy and there were lots of animals to look out for...

But this is my experience, maybe someone else has had another (better) experience.

Drive safely and have a wonderful trip!

I've been reading all the replies and am still not sure which way to go. We'll be staying in P'kop - what gate would you guys suggest we enter. Driving from Thabazimbi so we'll not be there early. My feeling is to drive Pretoria Belfast Lydenburg Sabie Hazyview and enter at Kruger gate/Phabeni. Or would you suggest travelling the N4 and enter at Numbi?

Philippa,

I would go Pretoria, Nelspruit, Hazeyview and enter at Phabeni. If time gets a little tight you can enter at Numbi, but think you'd prefer Phabeni.

Thanx for your reply!! Does anybody know what the toll fees are from Pretoria - Nelspruit?

Also: check the sanral website: www.nra.co.za (for future reference)
Can tell you the tolls are:
Diamond Hill: R 27.00
Middelburg: R 45.00
Machadodorp: R 67.00 (you miss this if you go Belfast/Dullstroom/Lydenburg/Sabie/Hazyview)

hi,

really looking forward to our next trip to SA!
Will be in Kruger for 10 nights!

We will drive there from Sun City to Orpen gate.

How long should we plan in for that drive?

6 1/2 hours? or is that too optimistic.

Thanks

Hi there. 6 1/2 hours from Sun City to Orpen Gate is a bit optimistic. You will first have to drive from Sun City to Pretoria (about 2 hours), and then continue from there via Witbank, Belfast, Dullstroom, Lydenburg, Ohrigstad and the Strijdom Tunnel to Orpen Gate. While the total distance from Pretoria to Orpen Gate is only about 400 - 450km, the road surface from Dullstroom onwards is quite bad in places, with lots of potholes, so your average speed for the last 250km or so will probably be less than 80km/h. I would allow at least 8 - hours total travelling time, stops included, to be safe. Remember to also take the Kruger Park gate closing times into account. Enjoy your trip!!

I would suggest you come from Sun City on the highway about one and a half hours
Continue to polokwane on the highway about 2 hours
From polokwane orpen is about 300km should take you between 3 and 3 half hours
Total about 6 and half to 7 hours

Philippa, I travelled that road years ago and it was a good road then, tarred, but what the conditions are like now I don't know. I travelled up from the Lowveld which wasn't the smartest direction to take as the views are stunning looking down the escarpment.

What about phoning someone, anyone, in Lydenburg, you might just get lucky with some information. :D

Thanx to everyone for their replies. Being back home after my trip to Kruger I can report that the N4 is the fastest route to travel, but the road between Sabie and Lydenburg definitely more scenic. The road between Roossenekal and Lydenburg has a few potholes, but nothing too big.

Hi guys,

We will be picking up a hire car from Jhb airport and then staying overnight at Emperor's Palace complex before making our way to Malelane gate the following morning, somewhere between 6-7am. What's the best route and how easy is it to navigate and get ourselves out of busy, busy Jhb?! I presume the journey from the airport to the hotel shouldn't be too bad, but concerned we may get lost trying to get out of Jhb!!

Thanks

The N4 through to Nelspruit and then on to Melalane.
A striaght forward route on a well maintained road.

Going to drive the N4, Lydenburg, Phalaborwa route in a couple of days. From the N4 is the R36 or R540 in better condition do you reckon? Thanks in advance

Avoid the N4-Lydenburg road (R36?) at all costs. Take the N4-Belfast-Dullstroom-Lydenburg option (was OK, not great, when I drove it in May) (is that the R 540?).

Johannesburg to Phalaborwa is 535km depending on what route you take.

Johannesburg to Punda Maria is 570km.

Hello Dear forumites,
I will be travelling to South Africa for the 4th time next Sunday. Just felt in love with your country.

we will spend one week in the Kruger and have decided to spend one night at Elephant Plains (Sabi Sabi reserve).
Next night will be at Punda Maria as my brother want to visit the northern area of Kruger.
We plan to drive to Punda Maria outside the park, but I wonder how long it would take and what route to use
Your advices would be again, very helpfull.
Thanks in advance
Looking forward to meeting forumites in the park.

It is about 370 kilometres to Punda , and the quickest would be to travel straight up the R533 , R40 to the R529 through Giyani onwards . Be aware of speedtraps , and animals .

I have two questions regarding driving back from the park.
1. Where is the easiest or best place to refuel the car near JNB airport berfore retuning it with out getting lost and loosing all the fuel??
2. On our last day (sunday)we leave Crocodile Bridge to JNB for our flight which leaves at 20.00. I would like to drive through the park, instead of N4, and come out of Malelane gate, when should I plan to leave CB please?
Thank you very much.
