Split from January 2013 Rains/Floods in Kruger.

Now i heard that Limpopo is getting heavy rains. Hopefully this won't cause them to open the gates at Tzaneen dam again. I must visit the park in 17 days time. :?

Lots of rain about. Roads are closed. Forecast upgraded to more rain right through the week..... Keep an eye on reports.

Got another 26mm at Johnniesdale overnight. The N'waponi river in front of camp came down in flood at 4 a.m., and is still flowing swiftly. It must have rain a lot more to the south, as the much bigger Nhlaralumi River has risen to a level where you can only just get a proper 4x4 through. The N'waponi flows into the Nhlaralumi, which in turn flows into the Olifants.

I'm stuck here, because the incompetents at Avis gave me VW Transporter instead of the SUV I booked.

Good luck johan
Thanks!

I've just crossed the Nhlaralumi twice in a 4x4 without any problems, it has dropped quite a bit, only about 35 cm deep now. Enough to stop my Transporter, though.

After 2 very heavy storms in the Orpen area we couldn't believe how much the Timbavati river had risen.
What was just a slow moving stream yesterday had changed overnight into a fast flowing river wall to wall.
Now at Satara and just some thunder about earlier but seems to have gone away for now.

I could see a heavy thunderstorm heading towards Orpen from the Timbavati late this afternoon, and another nice one in the direction of Hoedspruit. Just started to rain here at Johnniesdale too. Not heavy (yet).

Yes, flood damage in the last two years has been severe. Let's hope Kruger will have respite to recover.

Still around? Hey, I'm stuck, as is everybody else here. Another 46 mm overnight, and the N'waponi is now a raging torrent. I can't imagine even a hardebaard bakkie getting through the Nhlaralumi. Anybody got a kayak?

Still raining lightly, will check the drifts as soon as it gets light. Doubt we will get beyond the first big one.

  Johan ...Don't think a kayak will even suffice this time round.
Stay safe

Shall try post an update as soon as possible after 9 a.m. Waiting for a bit more light before setting out to check the rivers and drift. Offline until I get back.
