 46 degrees is hot Squirrel. Johan up there at Pafuri it can be sizzling :D How are the sightings? But I guess a person who stays there permanently 'climatise' and become used to the heat. Some visitors currently in the Park mentioned on the forum that the last few days were very hot and humid. But there are days during summer that the weather can be cool to moderate and rainy as well.

Yup. Very hot! But oh, the bird-life up North in the summer! It's worth any amount of discomfort! 8)

I agree Squirrel, Kruger is such a special place to visit. We cannot do anything about the weather but we can still enjoy ourselves even when the "heat is on"

We are lucky enough to visit for a month every year so don't feel like we have to rush around to see everything in a couple days.

One month in Kruger  , I´m starting to feel a bit worried just in case the same bug bites us, so we couldn´t stop visiting Kruger...
Lucky you, from paradise ( I love Rockies) to paradise! Enjoy!

Is August/September a good time to visit Kruger? I hope so, it´s our time.

Regards.

Oh trust me, the bug WILL bite :) I also have to agree with you, I don't think I have seen a more beautiful part of the world than my home and I thank my lucky stars every day but it is soooo nice to get some heat and sun in the middle of our winter and yes Kruger is also a paradise.
Sorry I cant comment on August/September I have never visited in those months, we like the heat :)

The car display usually shows a value considerably higher than the real temperature ("real" as in when the temperture is measured in the standardized manner used at official met stations), especially when you are driving in full sun, and even more so if you are driving on a sizzling hot tar road that's radiating heat.

I have a miniature weather station dangling from my bag, which bag usually rides on the floor by the front seat, i.e. mostly in the shade. It generally indicated a temperature several degrees lower than the car display does, but even that is too high.

As a very rough rule of thumb, I would say that you need to subtract 4 of 5 degrees from whatever the display shows on a sunny day, but only 1 or 2 on a cloudy one.

I was watching Carte Blanche last night and there was a section on global warming and changing weather patterns. There have been floods for three years running now in Jan/Feb. I do hope that this is not a new pattern. My experience in the past has been floods followed by dry patches.

I wonder if anyone can recall a period when there has been three years of floods. :hmz:

Interesting question MM. From past climate/weather the Climatologists/Meteorologists have established that there are wet cycles and dry cycles in Kruger. Flooding for three years in a row is perhaps a new Kruger record in terms of the weather :hmz: Or perhaps global warming will change all of this and flooding may become more frequent.

Aug/Sept is a very nice time to visit. The combination of cooler temperature, less lush vegetation and the fact that there are fewer water sources makes for easier viewing of most mammal species. The malaria risk is also lower that time of the year. The drawback of Aug/Sept is most trees are less spectacular because of the winter and there are less birds. Having said that - anytime in Kruger is a feast!

I remember in the early days of the forum - 9 years ago - Bert was doing rain dances for Kruger as there had been a mini-drought after the floods of 2000.

We can blame it all on Bert

3rd visit to KNP thinking of Nov/Dec'15?

Unread postby GILLYFLOWER » Tue Aug 05, 2014 3:19 pm

Have been to KNP twice before but in October and would like to push out dates to later in the year - what are people's experiences of this time of the year? Going to use the bush veld camps this time if we can get in!

Welcome to the forums Gillyflower.

It will probably be quite hot then, but if that doesn't worry you, go for it!!!

You will also need to consider anti malarials.

The summer birds will all be back by then, so you will see different species than when you will have visited in October.

What ever you decide, I hope you have a wonderful trip.
