Now sat in cold, rainy UK, hard to believe I had breakfast yesterday in Skukuza! But whilst there we asked about the opening of the Cattle Baron and was told by the staff working there that it was due to open on the 27th October :D

Gosh we ate at Skukuza yesterday - it was the worst food I can ever remember eating in 50 years in KNP. We sat outside under tarps and hessian barricades, all 4 of us ordered something different and almost everything was unpalatable. I had grilled chicken thigh with pap and sauce. The Pap was cut in a square not even 2cms high, ice cold and there was about 1 table spoon of cold tomato and onion gravy on it. The food at the Mugg & Bean has been very good. The only other disappointment was Tindlovu at Mopani - bad service and bad food. So YAY for M & B in the park. The food is still vey good at Tshokwane ……...

I thought I would just document our experience with eating in the park during our recent trip. Just our views :D

Mugg and Bean, at Lower Sabie, Olifants, Letaba and Satara, when we got a plate of hot food that we had ordered it was delicious. But, wait times were long, in Olifants the waitress came and apologised for the delay and then when the food arrived all 3 plates of food were cold! At Lower Sabie, we got 2 correct meals and 1 was totally wrong. I think the chain is a victim of their own success! At Satara, the waiter apologised for our drinks taking 25mins to arrive, he told us that the drinks should have arrived within 4mins, the food, arrived 30mins after the drinks. We liked that in all places someone came round and asked how our meal was, it was unfortunate that in 2 of the restaurants we were asked this before our food had arrived.

Skukuza, we ate 1 dinner, the setting was wonderful, the food acceptable. We had breakfast on our last day and that was very good.

Mopani, at Tindulovu, again the wait for our food was so long, the babotie was good, but the lamb chops weren't great.

We are visiting Skukuza this coming weekend and we were wondering if the Cattle Baron has opened yet? Last news was that it would open today? (20 October 2014)

Thanks

Lunch at Mugg and Bean at Letaba on Saturday was good. Friendly prompt service and tasty food.

Popped in for take-aways to the newly opened Cattle Baron here in Skukuza. Service was good, it was jolly busy. All looks great! Still some building going on on the river side; the deck etc is not yet opened. Note that the two thatch lapas are now gone and the lovely new gardens there.

My wife and I plus two friends had dinner at the Cattle Baron last evening, the opening night. The décor of the dining area is very nice, dark wood and leather. The seating was comfortable. The service was good, a little inexperienced for the new staff but the senior staff ensured things went well. The menu was very comprehensive, maybe the same as the other Cattle Baron restaurants. We all had steak meal which was cooked as requested, medium rare, and delivered without too much waiting time. Prices for a steak start at around R140. Other dishes such as chicken were much less expensive, as were the burgers. We all thought the meal was good value for the money.

We wonder what happened to the bats that lived in the thatch lapas that have now been removed. Our friends from the UK are gurus when it comes to bats, and in the UK it is illegal to move any roosting bat and they were very surprised the bats had been moved. Apparently fines of up to 10,000 UK pounds per bat can be levied on people moving bats. Does anyone know what has happened to the bats.

Jim
