When we first came to Kruger we ate all our meals at camp restaurants. As time passed we began to self cater more but it was when the food and service became so bad, not to mention the same menu everywhere, that we began almost total self catering. As this topic has been debated on the forum for quite some time, it is quite obvious that most other people are doing the same thing..even all of us who have to fly in and bring much more with us to cater. So, if the food standards improve, so will the footfall I am certain. As Hugh has confirmed, these brands need to maintain standards; if they fail to do so, not only will the camp restaurants fail but so will their global reputations and I just cannot believe these companies would allow that to happen. Another point is that if they are successful in the Park, then it will bring more employment to the local people and surely that can only be a good thing.

Mopani is already being run by the conference folk (who are apparently also going to do BnD).

Thanks EJ - that explains a lot! Still would be nice to hear what is going to happen in Shing and Punda......although Punda was always a great little restuarant hope it remains so.............

Does anyone know if George is still running the restaurant at Punda Maria ? He ran it very successfully.

I too miss the old days, eating at the old style restaurants with their delicious meals, friendly service and real Kruger atmosphere and of course, the drum call at meal times.

Having said that.......I am really excited about all the new restaurants opening up.  I travel alone and spend most of my day out of camp, so it will be a real treat to, once again, have a decent affordable meal available on the nights I don't feel like cooking..........which will definitely be more often now. :D :D

Well done Sanparks!

Another point is that each venue has been awarded separately. So if one restaurant fails to maintain the standards that restaurant may be penalised or even closed and replaced with another operator. Previously one large multi-national ran all the restaurants and very little could be done to address problems if they were not interested.

In the early days of our visits to KNP, we always ate at the restuarant for the first and last nights as it meant that most of the camping/caravanning equipment could be packed away on the last evening and on arrival, after a long trip, it was not necessary to make food. Lately, we have stopped visiting the restuarants for obvious reasons. BUT now - well, there's a very good chance that we will return to our old "tradition".........

I am with you on this one PNF, I always used to eat out on the last night( a long time ago) , certainly a lot easier when caravanning or camping. I will give it a go again
I am sure we will all get feedback rather quickly when they open their doors.
Lets give them a chance to at least get up and running, and then we can all decide if we want to make use of the new restaurants or not, as we all do now.
I for one, wish them success :D

Ever since I can remember there have been restaurants in Kruger, now they have a name, so what, the wodden banana also has a name, that doesn't commercialize Kruger and pose a threat for gloom and doom to come

I feel that Sanparks have done their best to try to find a solution to the restaurant issue by bringing in these franchises, to satisfy the needs of Kruger visitors, let's see what happens, maybe they will turn out to be an asset to the park.

That's what we need a bit more of around here, a more positive attitude just like yours. Give the new guys a chance

I am being positive about these new restuarants and so look forward to them being there and I know they will do well as peeps always go to a place they know < If you go with a postive attitude you will find them great but if you go with a negative attitude you will find fault however hard they try to please you .
So until they get them up an running lets just smile be happy and look forward to that first meal.

I'm still dreaming about that Mugg & Bean Chicken and Avo Wrap at Letaba, while looking out over the river bed..............roll on March!!!!

As Carol said, all camps currently have a restaurant, so the buildings are already there.
Whether it's a Wooden Banana, a Wimpy, a Mugg & Bean or a Cattle Baron, should make no difference, other than the food will be better than is currently being offered!!!

Each franchise will have it's own indoor décor, menus etc, but it is my understanding that the outside areas have to be in keeping with the park, so there will be no flashing neon signs!!!!

This a done deal, so no amount of negativity will alter things.

Please lets give them a chance, and if people really object to these changes, they have the option to stay away.

I hope they can get an organisation to make a success of the venture. Incidently I stay over at Satara at least four times a year, the last time 6 weeks ago. Where is the Wimpy exactly as I have never noticed it before?

Hi Geoff,

The Wimpy will soon replace the current restaurant.

Not sure if you are interested on my take on this, H. e  but I don't see how the new franchises will not make Kruger one whole ?
