1969 when I was 3. Cant remember anything. 1970 can remember coming in at Numbi and seeing a pack of wild dogs. We saw a lion kill on the lower sabie skukuza road and 2 cheetah ran across the road behind us on the salitjie road. Have never seen anything on that road since. I remember Satara had no electricity and cold showers. Not nice in winter. We had an old chev Kommando with 6 of us in the car.

After travelling from Mexico to Thailand and from the USA to the Caribean we 'discovered' Kruger in 1998.
3 whole days in Kruger :hmz: but that was enough to find out that this was THE place to be. Unfortunately not very close to our home 8) .
But anyway nowadays we try to 'live' in Kruger about 7 weeks each year. We love it!

1984 - I was 6 years old and we stayed at Skukuza, Letaba and Olifants. The love affair is never ending.

I waited for my oldest to be 5 before taking her but my youngest was 3 and now both of them are seasoned visitors with 5 visits under each of their belts! Hopefully their addiction will continue too.

My parents love to tell the story of their first leopard sighting ...
they stopped just outside Skukuza to attend to me on the back seat while I was still in nappies, and the rosetted cat walked from one side of the road to the other right in front of the car :D

In late-1977 I was invited to stay with friends at their very basic camp in Timbavati Reserve. I vaguely remember going into Kruger for a day visit. I didn't know anything about Kruger or wildlife then, so it is all a bit hazy. Another guest was Dr Sue Hart, but it was only long after the trip that I learnt more about her. I wish I had known more then and been able to have a meaningful conversation with her! I remember walking with her in the dry Timbavati River bed, watching some giraffe watching us.

Next visit was with my parents, from UK, as part of our honeymoon in 1983. I don't remember where we stayed or for how long.

In 1988/89 we stayed at Berg 'n Dal with our two toddlers. I took a large lasagne for a supper, not realising that the chalets didn't have ovens, and ended up chopping it up and cooking it in a saucepan on the stove!

Since then we have become regular visitors, either staying just outside the park or at one of the camps. We have also stayed at Sand River Bush Camp. I have been fortunate enough to do several courses in KNP and have been able to see a lot of the park on foot and learn a vast amount from knowledgeable people.

Last year I clocked up 6 visits but this year only 1. Will have to put that right in 2014! I hope to have many more years of enjoying Kruger (and other SANParks).

When I was about 5 - 1966. And then when I was 29 - 1990. Have been back every year for the last 23 years. I have been the Kruger 5 times in 2012(including 19th Jan 2012 - flood) and again this year 5 times.

Always looking for a better photo.

My first visit was in 1977 when I was 10 with my parents and we went every year till 1986 when I started working. In 1990 me and my parents went again and then a 16 year gap before I went again :hmz:

My family and I(wife and 2 daughters)started going to Kruger in 2006 and for that we bought our caravan and since then we have been going to Kruger every year(sometimes twice).

My oldest daughter loved it so much she is now studying at Sondela Acadamy in Bela Bela to become a site guide and ranch manager

I always had a dream as a child to visit Kruger. That dream only came true in 2005. No planning were done, no map of Kruger and not knowing what to expect or if I would have accommodation to sleep in. All that I knew was that I was going to Kruger in my secondhand Hilux bakkie with a canopy, so I had my bed on wheels and with it a 15 liter can of water and 20 liter of diesel just in case!

Spent 4 nights from the sunday (had to back in Bloem the next weekend for my brothers wedding), 1 at Pretoriuskop, 1 at Skukuza, 1 at Satara and 1 at Letaba.

Eventually I did got back to Bloem in time for the wedding but without photos of the trip or the bakkie (all got stolen in Graskop).

But I was hooked and had to return in 2007 for 4 days were not enough.

Oh yes not long ago. It was 2006

Before we entered the park we visited pilanesberg and we did not see elephants. But my friend promised me elephants. And after we drove 100 meters after entering Malelane gate we saw my first elephants.

after that holidays I became addicted to African safaris.

Have a look and see, this is what Kruger did to me.

In 1976, vivid memories, as if it was yesterday, camping as a 6 year old.

My folks were in a slip-stream canvas walled caravan, my dad drove a two litre white Chevrolet which was all the rage back then, and had pitched my own little two man nylon tent up close to the fence, just out of reach of the elephants trunks.

I slept with my tent zip on my mesh door slightly open, and the story of how my dad tied a piece of string around my big toe so that I would wake up when the hyenas came around in the night....well, that's a story for another post.

Well, compared to most of you we started very late with our first visit.
It was in 2010, staying at Olifants and Mopani for overall at least only 3-4 nights.
Afterwards we are trying to make it to Africa every second year for 3 weeks. 2012 we stayed in P'kop, Olifants and Letaba.
this year it will be Lower Sabie, Olifants and Letaba and for more than 3-4 nights :)

Not that easy to coordinate with a demanding job in Europe....

But I finally knew that I'm on vacation if sitting on the first evening in KP and smell the braai and africa

Well i've seen 8mm movies of me as a baby sitting on mums lap in the back of the valiant at the Transport dam so I would say about 1972/3. My earliest memory was of my Dad grabing me and pulling me back because because I felt it only right that I recover my packet of sweets stolen from me by a baboon at Nkhulu, about 1978.

Rooies wrote:July 1966 was my first visit. It were the days when there were the huge communal fires at every camp. You did not braai at your bungalow, but took it to the communal fires where stories about the day's sightings were exchanged. No tarred roads then. During summer, the roads north of Letaba were closed.

Same here . Big fires at Tshokwane with hot coals waiting for you to braai on.
