What are your top 5 items never to forget to bring to Kruger

Unread postby Travelstory » Tue Apr 23, 2013 7:40 pm

So happy to have booked my 8th trip to Kruger; my SO's second. It's been four long years. Already starting to pack even though we are months away. We all bring binoculars, camera, coolers and such. But we must all have some special things that we have discovered over the years/trips that we can no longer go on a trip to Kruger without.

Here are mine:

Rubber Snakes - we put them outside near the food which helps keep the monkeys away!
Large Insulated Mugs - so we can take coffee with us on those early morning game drives
Comfy Camp Chairs - we only book perimeter accommodations and sometime like to chill all day outside
Cigarette Lighter charger we can use in the car to charge our items while driving (camera batteries and such)
Whistle - You never know...., so I always have one around my neck especially around camp at dark

What are yours?? Looking forward to getting great ideas!

Dana

Black flat bottomed cast iron pot for bread (Bakpot - also used for stews and roasts when time allows)
Flask for coffee (to have early morning at the dam, view site, etc. with my rusks and boerekoekies)
Mozzie medication (I take a homoeopathic one- no after effects)
Plenty of cash(Petrol Card) for petrol - we like to criss-cross the park (the last 6 week trip we did 6000 kms in KNP)
Torch with rechargeable batteries - essential at night to avoid the creepy crawlies.
And if I don't take beer for the SO I will be left at home - there that is also 6. Sorry

Jeez but it's difficult to fit all the "must-haves" into a five item list :hmz:

1. Binoculars
2. Booking confirmation letter
3. Cash & bank cards
4. Cellphone & charger
5. Comfy pillow

I've decided the camera is only item no. 6 ... as one can always enjoy the park without taking :cam: of everything

Ok not Kruger but Mapungubwe but boils down to the same.

1. Note book with writing stick (pen or pencil) to write down the stuff I know I will forget bird list animal list groceries list, worst ever to drive 80km to Musina and 80 km back to remember you forgot something as you pull in to the camp. I have all my telephone number inside the front cover reception, emergancy numbers ect.

2. Tooth brush (no shops at Map to quickly buy one)

3. Wet wipes ,3 llittle kids in the car and one big one (hubby)

4. Hubbies tool box he will leave beer at home if we don't have space but that big blue toolbox will go in.

5. Fluffy (old style cloth nappy) great for everything from sun shade on the window to first-aid to cool compress in the heat.

Mommy things....... maybe in 18 years I will be back to the usual stuff like beer, amarula and wine bottle opener.
I live in my own little world. But it's okay they know me here.

KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

As we can safely assume (as the OP stated) that we will all remember to pack the "standard" items (booze, food, coolers, phone chargers etc), and if you take into consideration the type of accommodation that you have (with/without kitchen) and plan accordingly; there are only a few items that we will always remember to take along:

Sharp knife

Fire tongs (for moving wood around and picking up meat that I drop into the coals)

A bundle of hardwood kindling (the firewood in the park often consists of quite large pieces of wood and I do not want to transport an axe).

Headlamps (so I can find my wine glass next to the fire)

Cafetiere for filter coffee in the mornings.

(We also have a "Kruger box" that we take along (permanently stocked) with plastic plates/mugs, camping cutlery, a small pot, the "skottel" , a gas bottle and a selection of spices and salt. Because you never know....)

(When he was alive) Jerry Hattrick
His car
His hip flask(s) containing Amarula
His wheelchair
An alarm clock

The rest we could do without or get there.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".
