During our recent visit to the KNP, I took these photos:

I have empathy for the people who placed the plaques, but this is simply not in order. If this is allowed, the place will look like the entrance of a shopping mall. Why don't the people in charge erect a sort of obelisk in a main camp where people can place their plaques?

There were similar plaques at Tshanga - they were removed by Sanparks .

Hi. One of those is for my sister and it was a place she wanted to be laid to rest. It is not as if it is a major big plaque (100mm x 50mm :( ) and when we ask a ranger if we could put one up we were told so long as we dont damage anything. May my sister fly free with the eagles until we meet again one day.

I do have sympathy with the families of the loved ones who are remembered in these spots, but over time, it is possible that dozens of these memorials will appear.
Maybe there could be a memorial wall at a place like Skukuza, nominating a favorite place in the park.
After all, I think there was a dog cemetery there!

The KNP is/was so special to so very many people. Just maybe SANParks should consider placing a tree stump in every camp and some selected sites and then make it available to those left behind by loved ones to fit a commemorative plaque for a fee where wonderful memories and times of joy could be re-lived.

I also think it is a good idea for the reasons mentioned by Kite.

I agree; it is an unfortunate fact that one 100 x 50 mm plaque might be unobtrusive; but 20 of them have an area of a square meter; and pretty soon you have an eyesore. Better to have sites within camps where plaques may be put up, for a fee.

If I were Unicorn88, I would request Lesego to be allowed to remove or have the plaque removed and recovered and not be destroyed and then to arrange to have it fixed in an agreed site, maybe not now but immediately but in the future as per my previous post.

I have seen a park in England where loved ones sponsored the planting of a tree and had a plaque made in memory of their loved one.
