jeffgordon wrote:Come on, that article is decidedly not an April Fool's joke.

I appreciate that the non-attributed (read: made up by the journalist) quote from the "tourist" at Skukuza was patently ridiculous (“I couldn't hear the machine of the electric fence ticking. In my opinion that electric fence was not on and I got really scared. What if a crocodile or a hippo decided to walk up the river bed and enter the camp?”) but people say stupid stuff every day of the year (I recall being at the N'wanetsi lookout point earlier this year and a woman arrived with a large group of Australian teenagers in tow, pointed to the stagnant pool below and announced, "Behold, the mighty Limpopo!") the article is, I believe, entirely genuine and as Joep says, paints the park in a less than favourable light.

Of far more concern is what I saw on the Orpen web cam in the early hours of last Monday:http://i45.tinypic.com/9st6af.jpg. I hope the electric fences at Orpen, Tamboti and Maroela were ticking away that night...

I read somewhere on the forum of a photographer who successfully tested the fence at BnD.......
He didn't try again.

Slightly off topic but I know of a Mod who has first hand experience that the fence at Addo is indeed electrified.

I am just wondering WHY a person would WANT to test the electric fence?

Maybe the "tourist from Skukuza" should be invited to come and test the fence himself  (Or a News24 journalist if they made up the story)

I'm still convinced it was an Aprils fool joke, albeit in poor taste and putting SANParks in a bad light, but surely no KNP regular took it seriously?

Now that we're on the topic, is Punda's fence electrified? I've always wondered :hmz: and the gate seems rather low in comparison with other camp gates (not that it bothers me!)

On or not who cares, they were not there for how many decades and now all of a sudden the fate of mankind rests upon them, seriously?
Written by a wuss, completely unneccessary drivel that paints Sanparks in a bad light, in my opinion :-)
But then again, published by News24 so no suprise there.

I can remember as a child when we once camped at Punda - before the fences were electrified - the fence were trapled flat at the bottom of the camping area.
We were the only campers for a whole weekend. Everynight the lions roared and in the mornings we found elephant tracks around our caravan. A great memory. 8) Today we prefer camps without fences.

LOL Giraffe now that experience Ive had at phalaborwa it borders on the kruger but not the kruger so I cant say the place but my scenario was a lot worse, I was 6 weeks pregnant and we went camping that easter weekend lol well being pregnant one needs the loo a whole lot more well that night I had to rush for the bathroom, it was dark outside my tent was tiny and I didnt see what was just ouside my tent well as I stood up straight and put the torch on I was standing facing the rear of a HIPPO I screamed with fright and dived back into the tent how I got in their so fast is still a wonder but I took off and the hippo took off in the opposite direction thankfully lol but hey that is one memory that I dont just want again it was frightening
