Well done SANParks, its a start.
I have to ask though, how many poachers would be making use of main entrance gates?
I hope the next few steps will be to put back those fences and have them patrolled.

Good news.

Movement at night between gates and camps, villages should also be tightened.

Guards should also be rotated regularly so as not to be become familiar with staff or regular visitors.
Indeed. And while they are at it, they sholuld also deny unroadworthy vehicles entry.

GlenD, there are many facets to this poaching dilemma. We all know that the possibility of bad apples within sanparks has been speculated about and confirmed in some cases. This is one measure to prevent or minimise the possibility of poaching from one specific source. So yes, poachers (in my opinion) do use main entrance gates sometimes. I have great respect for this move by sanparks. Please leave no stone unturned to in order to stop this madness.

The only question I have is the release references poaching in one area, and illegal hunting later on. I assume there is no difference, is there?

Hi stark :D

Google brings up the following: -

Poaching is the unlawful taking of wild plants or animals; the law concerned may be e.g. the law of property or local or international conservation and wildlife management laws. Violations of hunting laws and regulations are normally punishable by law and, collectively, such violations are known as poaching. - Wikipedia

Poaching is illegal hunting, killing, capturing or taking of wildlife violating local or international wildlife conservation laws. This can occur in a number of ways. For example, illegal shooting or trapping of an animal from a private or public property amounts to poaching. - uslegal.com

So, yes, no difference.

Thanks DB, I figured it was just a turn of a phrase, but wasn't sure if SA law had different legal levels that required different verbiage. (Murder vs manslaughter for example)

I can remember the days when there was a fence maintenance guy stationed in a little hut every ten kilometers or so. His job was to patrol his section daily on a bicycle, and repair and damage caused by animals trying to break through the fence or dig under it. The job description did not include anti-poaching (they wrere not even armed), but these patrols did mean that human incursions would be quickly detected, which presumably also acted as a deterrent to some extent.

Thanks Lesego,

Thumbs up for any measures to curb the poaching!

It does however not take a rocket scientist to realise that the majority of poachers enter via the unprotected Moz border. Why not erect the fences and patrol those until such time that the poaching is under control? In a war (which this is) surely the most vulnerable position must be secured ASAP?? Maybe I just do not know all the behind the scenes measures taken.

Anyway, long live Kruger's rhinos!

I am pretty sure Gen Joh has a good idea where the poachers are by now, and they will be worked over.

Tightening entry and exit will hopefully mean that;
1. One night stays for cross border riding will be enforced,
2. Overloaded vehicles will be refused entry,
3. Unroadworthy vehicles will be refused entry,
4. Permits will be checked propely and those who cruise around camps at night looking for vacant accom will be found out,
5. No bones or other unofficial 'souvenirs' will leave the park,
6. There will be control/records of visitors who are not paying tourists,
7. Banned people will not be allowed in,
8. The rules are spelt out better, especially speeding and littering.

Welldone SANParks   This is long overdue.

Hope the implementation of the new security checks at entrance gates will not only be limited to Kruger but the same to be implemented at all other Sanparks :hmz: :hmz: :hmz:

We are currently in the park and have been in and out of 3 different gates. We have yet to have our car checked properly, kind of disappointing!
