Hi there ajay madan, welcome to the forum.

There is a wealth of information of the forum but it will take some reading. As Hugh has said, take some time to read through all the topics here and you will find answers to all your questions and much more.

The first thing is a map of Kruger. You can find an interactive one here

Olifants is a fantastic camp in the centre of Kruger. Both Letaba and Satara camps are in easy reach and offer some great viewing. You can read more about Olifants here and find pictures of the various types of accommodation in this thread.

The Travel Tales forum will give you an idea of what to do while you are in the park.

To get the most out of your visit to Kruger there are a few basic tips that we suggest.

Don't rush. For a start you are on vacation and relaxing. Drive at about 25-30kph, this speed should allow you to look out into the bush and spot things and be able to stop in time.

Take binoculars and a camera for all the members of your party,

If you see someone stopped at the side of the road, approach slowly and carefully. If you can't see what they are looking at, ask them. Most people are more than happy to show you what they have spotted.

The best time for spotting is usually the early part of the day and the late evening. Get up just before the gates open. If you feel tired, then take a nap in the hotter part of the day when animals are also less active.

I find the area between Olifants and Satara to be very productive.

The tar road H1-4 goes through some wonderful savannah-type grasslands and is good for wildebeest, zebra, ostrich, elephants, hyena and lions. You could then travel a littel further south of Satara and along the S100 road. You have riverine bush on one side of the road and grasslands on the other. You can then head north on the S41 (call in at Gudzani Dam) and join the S90 back towards Olifants.

Another good trip would be to take the S39 that follows the Timbavati River to the picnic spot, then the S40 down to the H7 and then to Satara.

While at Satara you'll be able to see the waterhole where our webcam is located. Its the other side of the fence, outside the restaurant.

ajaymadan, if you leave Olifant early one morning at about 6am, you can take the tar road to Satara and have breakfast there. It is only about 60 km from olifants to satara, but remember you will be traveling at an average of between 25 to 30km per hour. With stopping to view animals it will take you about 2 to 3 hours to reach satara.

Have breakfast there and then as Saraf suggested, do the S100, we have always been lucky to have seen Lions on that road, then you can make your way back to Olifants. Have a rest in the afternoon and then look at your map and plan a short late afternoon drive close to Olifants.

I do hope you have a lovely time there, just remember to drive slowly to have the best chance of spotting the animals.

Ajay, I do think Olifants is really a good first time camp. Try to get a copy of GO Kruger at your local store. I think they are available at every store selling the GO magazine. It is only R40 and gives a very comprehensive feel for the Park. It also takes you through the possibility for drives in each area.

I hope this is the first of many visits. Enjoy

If you've already booked 4 nights at Oliphants, don't try to second-guess yourself. It is a wonderful camp! No one has mentioned the view, but it is spectacular, you are high on a cliff looking down to a paradise inhabited by all kinds of animals. There is a nice restaurant there and a shop for groceries and other items. Also, there is a bridge quite close where you can leave your car and look up and down the river. You never know what will be there! It can get very busy sometimes with all the animals coming in. You will like it. Have fun.
