I have booked again for late August and although having the bridge open will really enhance the visit, I would not change my booking if it were not open.

Good call imo Leervis. We have had the most fantastic time at Balule. Never seen so many animals from the camp fence.

Hi DinkyBird,
Thank you so much for the update and pic. Something is happening. Hope it happens fast enough to withstand the next heavy summer rains in a month or two...
Glad you enjoyed the trip.

DinkyBird wrote:Yoda, I do not want to give wrong info; but according to Titus and also if you refer to Lesego's post above, the bridge will open in about April next year.

There is a construction site at the pump house, and a concrete mixer at the bridge, so obviously work is happening, but it is going to take some time still I think.

Thanks DB,
That's a shame. The S91-S92 along the Olifants is one of my fave drives. And I always cross the bridge to see what's in the river. With construction and the bridge being closed, I doubt it will be worth doing this drive in December. :(

Give it a try anyway Yoda. Construction companies close for a month in SA from about mid Dec (not sure if this will be the case here in KNP). We were not disturbed on those drives at all.

Has anyone been staying at Balule over the festive season, who may be able to give any news on the repairs to the low water bridge. The Olifants river is probably flowing quite strong at present, is it?

Chip, I can confirm that the Balule low-water bridge is very much sealed off to tourist traffic. Assuming that the building trade was closed from mid-December - we saw no-one working on the bridge - they have taken care to seal the bridge with a low wall from the S91-S92 junction, and with barriers on the S90 side. However, the S89 and S90 are beautifully green and full of game, so though I prefer the access across the bridge, we still had a magic time there. The lady at the Olifants reception said that the builders had promised access to the bridge by March/April 2015. I haven't confirmed this, though, so let's hope it is true.

Thanks so much for that information onewithnature. Much appreciated. We are only going to Balule in May, so hopefully the bridge will be complete by then.

I'm not sure whether this question has been asked and answered already, but can anyone tell me whether the low bridge crossing the Olifants River at Balule has been repaired and is operational again?

I quickly phoned the reception at Olifants and was told that the bridge is not fixed yet
