As for me we've also had our fair amount of charging events the one that really stuck to me was the day we were on our way to satara from olifants via the tar road we were less than 2km from satara and I had seen a honey badger right next to the road we were all busy watching the badger on my side of the car when my eyes caught an elephant storming out from deep in the bush trumpeting flapping ears and charging full speed ahead for us i alerted my dad who reversed needless to say my dad wanted to play chicken with the thing and as he was mock charging us in the tar road so was my dad with the Mercedes Benz engine I was going hysterical and climbed into the tiny back window of the car can u imagine that a grown woman doing that well that action sent my family into torrential laughter which I still today don't think was funny but ja it distracted the elephant and my dads attention and he sauntered off back into the bush where he came from! Well ill say this hey if my father and that elephant hadn't called it quits when they did I wouldve climbed out that car and ran to camp that's how terrified i was from that day on i refuse to drive in a car with father in the kruger and I don't go near elephants if they are next to the road I just keep driving if people driving with me want pics then they must take it while were passing them :o

Another episode was on my birthday august 2011 the tar road btw skukuza and lower sabie on our way to camp before the gates close I was driving and as I came around the corner their in front of me was 2 bulls fighting in the middle of the road my instant reaction was reverse 600m up the road away from them other people came charging past us only to see what was happening and also reversed, I sat waiting clutching the steering wheel so tight from fear another oomie saw I was in distress and asked if he could help he told me to drive on his bumper that he'd get me thru, I did just that and when we neared the ellies i told my hub to take the steering wheel cos im going to close my eyes he did and we got thru unharmed well I have yet to live this adventure down with my SO because he thinks I trusted the oomie more than him but in actual fact I had decided that if the ellies were to attack us then they'd attack his car first and I could still get the hell out of their because I didn't want to die on my birthday, sorry kind oomie who helped me but when it comes to ellies I always see my life flash in front of my eyes :o

Did They shoot him and what I am most curious about: did they find anything that could explain the behaviour?

No, they did not shoot him or in fact find anything wrong as far as I know!
Think he just wandered off back into the bush!

I Have A healthy respect for elephants!

Im absolutely am skriked out when they are near. Always fear they going to charge n chuck the car!
Like watching at 100m + distance. then its quite amazing to see their behavior and how they interact with one another.

Never underestimate the power of Ellie's.

I have an uncle who worked for Botswana wildlife and after fixing one of the borehole pumps in the Savuti region was charged and hit by a very angry cow. She lifted and rolled his land cruiser before a aunt joined in and together they wrapped his car around a tree, thankfully he wasn't injured in the incident, turned his car back onto its wheels using a highlift jack and limped home.

Also, on an unrelated note, last week after surprising 2 white rhino in the berg en dal area, I was charged, first charge he pulled up 20cm from the vehicle and ran off into the bush only to come back out onto the road and charge a second time, this time I threw the car in reverse and reserved with skill I didn't even know I had in me.

Have video but it doesn't do justice to just how close he was

And this is exactly why i steer clear of elephants because they remember everything bad that's happened to them and take it out on some other innocent victim, they are the most unpredictable animals alive, I love ellies but i am deathly afraid and wary of them
