Hello,

I plan my trip to SA in September/October 2015.
Due to Malaria I will not stay in the KNP. I guess rather Sabie or maybe Hazyview e.g.
So I plan 2 1-day-trips into the park.
I guess 1 day I will book a guided tour. But I also want to have 1 full day on my own in the park.

So what do you think might be a good route for a full day Safari? How "deep" into the KNP could I come with this very limited time frame?

E.g. IN at Phabeni gate and OUT at Numbi Gate? Or might it be better for wildlife watching to pass Skukuza as far as I can get and then take the same way back through Phabeni Gate?
Or a totally different way?

Thanks in advance! :)

Warm welcome to the forum schrummel!

There are so many different routes to take and everyone would have their preferred one but considering you might stay in Hazyview, then one suggestion would be to get to the Phabeni gate as early as possible, preferably at gate opening, 6am in September and 5.30 am in October, then for a good but long drive would be to make your way along the S1 from Phabeni gate towards Skukuza, then down to Lower Sabie along the H4-1, maybe stop in for a bite to eat there, carry on over the causeway bridge and up the H10 towards the Tshokwane picnic site.
Then you could either carry on towards Satara and exit the park at Orpen or
come back down the H1-2 back towards Skukuza, go over the low level bridges and depending on time either exit at Kruger gate or if time allows Phabeni gate.
Would be around 200 kms drive which might not sound like a lot but when you are driving slowly and stopping for sightings and food breaks can take a long time.
Remember you must exit the park by gate closure or risk a fine, so a careful eye on the time is important.
Get yourself a map book so you can see where you are at any given time and decide if you have enough time to complete the route or take an alternative shorter one.

Some Maps

Hi Elsa,

thanks for these Information. I am positively surprised. I didn't thought to even get to Lower Sabie and back in one day! :)
So then I guess I will be at 6 at Phabeni and then leave at Croc Bridge. So I can spend as much time as possible in the park and can go back to Sabie around the park if gates are closed. Will be a tough day but worth it I hope ;)

And thanks for the maps!
Do you know maybe some maps to check where I might be able to see which animals?
I already found many written hints but would be great to have a nice overview in a map.

Do you have any experience with guided tours?
I found GAP Torus e.g. which a full day Safari from Sabie+Hazyview.
I am just wondering if it is worth it. Do they maybe better know where to go? Or do they talk to other guides while driving to find the best spots?
Or would you rather say it is the best to do it on my/our own?

Greetings schrummel...

Welcome
I have a question, why not take some malaria tablets, and just stay in the park?
In the southern area of the park, you can pretty much see the magnificent 7 in one drive. The area is so densely populated with game, that your chances of seeing them is extremely high! There are obvious roads that guests favor, but there is never really a guaranteed road that will ensure sightings! But down south is the best area to see sightings like Lion, Wild Dog, Leopard, Cheetah etc.

Personally I suggest you try stay away from the Guided tour, and rather enjoy the travel in your own vehicle. The only reason is that you would be in control of your sighting time, preference etc. Remember when you are with people, you need to be considerate of their wants/needs etc....

I wish you the best with your trip and sightings!!!

Hi schrummel and Welcome!

I don't know why you think that staying outside of the park is malaria free. So far as I know, all of the lowveld is a malaria zone, so whether you stay in or outside of the park makes no difference, you should still definitely be taking a malaria prophylactic. I would suggest that you should consult both your GP and a tropical disease specialist to know what you options are.

Enjoy your trip!

Hi Arks,

thanks for the Information!
I want to stay in Sabie - so a bit far from the Park but as far as I know no Malaria risk area.
Graskop and Pilgrim's rest would also be possible. Is there any pro/con for any of these towns?

I don't want to take any drugs cause I have some General problems with my stomach and so I probably would get even more Problems due to some side effects.
So I will try to use as many odours, sprays, candles. etc. as I can and will reduce the risk during the night by sleeping outside.

I know in General not the perfect solution but hopefully the best solution for me
