Up to now, I have read each and every post on this thread, opened each and every news release/video. Absolutely shocking! I can only echo what everybody else have said up to now, and that is a BIG thank you to all SANPARKS personnel, mods, and everybody for their hard work during this very sad period of time.   Especially, first of all Ecojunkie, and together with her, Dinkybird!   DB, you have been very busy these past few days, and it doesn't go unnoticed. Thanks a million! Lesego, you stay a star!

The bridge outside skukuza towards kruger gate is damaged but it is open. The bridge just before tshokwane is also damaged but open. The low water bridge crossing the sabie river is closed also the bridge going over the olifants to balule. The t-junction of the H8 to olifants is damaged and closed. Detour on the gravel road open past balule.

Panic, indeed

The power of water cannot be described.

I once sat in the Free State at a peaceful scene. I knew that we were waiting for "floods".

I watched an empty dam become a death scene for many little creatures in minutes. I could not believe the speed, but also the calm.

Any news on Biyamiti? I have a reservation there for the coming weekend. I see they still list it as closed.

Anyway, hats off to all the staff and SANDF who really had their hands full these past few days and just proved that they will go the extra mile.

Regards,
Tinus

Hi TT,

Even if they open the camp you might still have problems with road closures around the camp and difficulties crossing drifts along the Croc river.

We stayed at Biyamiti last year (maybe same weekend - end of Jan) and could not cross Biyamiti weir and Mhlambane river (S114/S119). Last year the volume of rain that fell the few weeks before our visit were much less than now so you might have the same problem.

I can understand the Croc bridge gate being closed.
I woud expext it to be. What I am puzzled by is that Phabeni is closed, and is still staying closed.
Maybe because the dirt roads leading from it is closed? :hmz:
The gate itself shouldn't be damaged surely?

Was Phabeni not opened after the 2000 floods?
The idea being that it would provide access to the park if there were serious floods again.

Yoda there is a bridge about 300 meteres from the gate. I think troubl is there already. So if the gate open you can go 300 meters only

Is there a way that persons who want to help, but cannot get to the kruger and adjacent areas, can get involved. I.e can we donate money for the cleaning up and rebuilding of the roads/ bridges etc and for those persons who lost their stuff in the flood? Is there a possibility something like this can be run through the VHR's?

Hey WFG :D
Sanparks have not yet set up a fund for the donations towards repairs. A request has been sent for a recovery donations fund to Sanparks, but I expect it will take a few more days to set up. But I look forward to the time when us sitting at home can chip in to help :D

I have asked him if it is possible to say when he thinks the camp will open.

Jerry replied:

From Tuesday 24/01/2012 it will be fine.

TT, I suggest you just keep a close watch on the media releases as things can change quickly, but it looks like you will be able to stay at Biyamiti next weekend.

Thanks. Will hold thumbs. It will be our first stay there.

A VERY special thanks to Ecojunkie, Dinkybird, Lesego and even Wacktazz, as well as those of you in the park, for keeping us 'in the loop'. :gflower: :gflower: :gflower:

I hope that your family and home are all okay, Wacktazz.

Thanks a million Lesego, you are a star! Your regular updates, at a time like this, were so appreciated. :gflower: :gflower:

Thank you as well to everyone who uploaded photos for us to share.  Sitting at home at a time like this, you can only imagine the devastation caused by something like this. Seeing the photos makes it all so much more real and heartbreaking.

We were yesterday at LP to see for ourselves what happen with the flood. The water was above the seats but except for all the flood dirt everything is still fine. The pathway from the gate was also washed away. It will take some time to clean all the mud but then we will spend again a lot of hours at our favourite bird hide :) :)
