In Afrikaans, Kruger is (was) officially known as

Nasionale Krugerwildtuin

I know that in Afrikaans a single entity becomes one word like onderburgemeester (deputy mayor), hoofbestuurder (general manager - although one I worked for was furious when he was called the algemenebestuurder).

So why is/was it not Krugernasionalewildtuin, or at least Kruger Nasionalewildtuin?

Any offers?

btw wildtuin is literally wild garden.

I'm Afrikaans and I don't know.

The best is alot of Afrikaans speaking people won't even go that far most just call it Die Wildtuin, maybe from the days before there was so many of them.

Even just to confuse the english the other arn't "wildtuine" they are "parke" as far as I have it.

It was after the Boer War that the Boere decided that we will not follow the British way of doing things. We decided that if the British do it like this, we are going to do it like that.

The English call it a Guinea Fowl, the Boere call it a Tarentaal. I think it is the same the other way round. The Boere call it a Kraanvoel but the Brits doesn't call it a Tap Bird.

As far as I know, as soon as a word ends with an "e" in Afrikaans, the next word is a separate word. To use BB's example of "algemene bestuurder", which cannot be one word, because "algemene" ends with an "e". Of course there are exceptions to the rule, as in BB's other example - "onderburgemeester", I guess because many moons ago it was called "onderburgermeester" until someone decided to drop the "r" before "meester".

Is the principle perhaps not the same as the name of the town Tweebuffelsmeteenskootfontein? It is one concept I think :hmz:

Maybe just because every Boer that crossed the Oranje river wanted to do it different than the next :w: hence all the different churches (as my old man said)

The Afrikaans rule says
"Afsonderlike woorde word los geskryf, maar woorddele word vas geskryf" :?

Separate words are written as two words... but word parts are written as one word
