leander, I think we must just be patient and wait for the information to come through.
I should think it might not be too long in the future as they seem to be making steady progress with the road repairs but obviously the more damaged the road, the longer it takes to repair.

Is there any indication as to whether these roads will be open soon ?

I cannot believe the destruction that masses of water can cause! I wonder if there is a way to fortify bridges against such extreme flooding? (I am not a structural engineer!)

I wondered that too.. Every year a flood comes and destroys the bridges. And then half a year (or more) is spent on fixing them. And then a flood comes again, and so the vicious cycle continues.. Hopefully a structural engineer can shed some light on this, because it really puzzles me... :hmz:

I think they do learn from experience in most cases, for example the new Croc Bridge has withstood the past 2 floods now with barely a scratch and so has the Lower Sabie causeway.
So as they rebuild I am sure they will employ new methods.
Often the cause of the damage apart from the incredible force of water is when there are huge trees uprooted and debris from up river which act as battering rams and get lodged against the bridge applying further immense pressure.
Of course this is my own opinion as I am not a structural engineer either!

Agreed, but after a miserable attempt in the rainy season, that ended up in the Indian Ocean.

Was at Orpen last week, they had opened the H7 from the Orpen side as far as the breach, Huge break the whole way across the road, no work being done on it as yet. However we saw a leopard, pack of wild dogs and a huge breeding herd of elephant among other sightings in a short space of time . I was glad that they were allowing people onto the closed section as the Rabelais loop was getting very boring with no sightings.

I emailed SANParks about the S33 and S34. The S34 work is scheduled to be completed by 14/06/2013, and the S33 by 31/08/2013.
