Can anyone tell me if you can still visit the hippo pools.
I have been going to the hippo pools for years.
My SO is still new to KNP and wanted to show him the pools in December but there was nobody there.
Would like to show him the pools when we will be visiting the park in April?

We visited Hippo Pools last year in June and there was a ranger there (old Lee Enfield and all).

We had a great viewing and were lucky enough to see a failed hunt by a female carrying young who then came straight over to the rock formation afterwards.

As far as I know, you can still go there. Last time I was there, last May, Daniel was there to watch and guide.

Timing seems to be the thing.
Sometimes there is a ranger and sometimes not.
Maybe he has tea and lunch breaks.
We've been there and seen the traditional bicycle and no ranger.

Hi there,
we were at the Hippo Pools near to Croc bridge last month and yes the guide is still there.
We got chatting as there were Lions at the cnr. of S25 and the road to the pools.
The guide is there from 6.30 am and knock off at 10.30am so not there all day.
There were two there the day we were there. It was a Saturday so maybe weekend hours not sure of their hours during the week though. Good luck its a beautiful area.

Hi guys and gals.

The rangers name is Daniel and his duty times are from Monday to Saturday 12:00.

He knocks off on Saturday @ 12:00, relaxes on Sunday and returns on Monday morning.

Follow these times and you will not miss him.

Oh yes, he arrives at his post half an hour after gate opening times, and leaves 1 hour before the gates close.

Planning a visit to Kruger next year and apart from the wildlife I would love to see some of the rock art here.
Is it possible to see sites from the vehicle or are there ranger walks that take in the rock art sites...or are they off limits?

Hippo pools at Croc Bridge has some, but for the others, you will have to book more than just a walk.

Sorry to disappoint you, the art work at the Hippo Pool has been vandalised, it is no more.
The site is still in existence and worth a visit the view over the Crocodile River is very rewarding and when there have a chat to the guide, he may be able to tell a few interesting stories, however the disappointment of what had happened here since our first visit somewhat blunts the experience.

The Bushman and Wolhuter Trails as already mentioned are a very good call.

I am shocked to hear about the rock art at Hippo pools .
We always make a point of going there when we are in the area .
Its great to chat to the ranger and just to be out where you know others have been many years ago.

Sadly the 2000 floods washed away the Bushman Paintings at the Hippo Pools.

There must be people out there who have photos of these paintings and that this piece of history has not been completely lost and forgotten.

There is still one painting that can be seen, albeit faint.

Thank you Glen D and Rookie 2009, that's good news, was led to believe by the Guide at Hippo pools in August 2009 that they had been washed away by the 2000 floods.
He took us across the river to see the hippos told us when we enquired said that there were no more paintings. ???
