I have heard of the extensive power shortages in SA.

Is the KNP affected?
Is it leading to problems with check in at the gates? And camps?

Hi yoda,

I was in Pkop the weekend, and the power was off when I arrived on Friday. The check-in was done manually, and there were no issues at all. The camp itself had a generator (as I suspect most camps do), so there was lovely cool air in the bungalow when needed !

Were the petrol pumps working?

I think KNP is pretty prepared to run without electricity because of their position and as a result might suffer more outages than the rest of us.

Keep in mind too, that mobile signal is also not guaranteed, so take cash with to pay for petrol and groceries.

Thank you for this tip DB, I am the one that never take cash along assuming the cards will be accepted

 RemiE. It can be a bit of a problem if you fill your tank with fuel and then find out the card machine lines are down ... and it does happen. When we were in Punda last month, there was an issue with the tower and the signal was down for more than three days. In Shingwedzi, it sounds like it is down a few times a week on a regular basis. And of course the south can also experience problems.

Olifants generator during a power failure is for admin, shop, restaurant but not bungalows.
We were hot and bothered at the thought of not being well prepared with chilled food and frozen meat for the bushcamp but power came back on after 2 hours, just as it got very dark.

I see on various other websites that Eskom is not planning on having to do any more load shedding until mid Jan.
Whether they stick to this is another story

Let’s be honest, what better place in the world to have a power failure. :D

Back in 2012, we had no signal for 2 days, and the signal was up for literally 10 minutes when the power went out for about 6 hours. Due to the combination of no signal and power, we had no money or petrol and spent the day sitting in camp reading.

Most people (who were lucky enough to have petrol) spent the day out of camp, so had this deserted place with nothing but the sound of birds to catch up on my reading. One of the best days spent in Kruger.

Is there going to be load shedding in the Kruger next week? We are due to leave tomorrow; all our catering plans - no all our plans - will be affected.

With Eskom you never know ... best take a car charger, fire lighters and wood ... We rarely (and by that I mean very rarely) use the stove plates. Maybe if you do, a gas bottle with plate attachment. Also freeze your meat before you go and keep the fridge closed as much as possible. We use this tin foils to cook our veggies in on the braai. Turn off cameras after taking a photo. I forget that often and I have a battery grip on mine with 2 batteries which helps a lot. Hope this helps a bit. :)

You may also literally end up in the dark during a power cut.

It may be prudent to take a 12V light of the type they use in caravans with a socket to plug it into the car's cigarette lighter.
I mounted a 1.5M LED striplight on a 50mm wide plank. This is bright enough to read by.

If you have laptops and cell phones to charge then you must make provision for that also. I am considering buyng a 300W pure sine wave inverter to connect to the car battery. You can then safely charge all your electronics and use the laptops as well.
It will be a large capital outlay but it can be used at home as well.

We were in Letaba over December 2014,we experienced one whole day of load shedding, the next day we needed to fill up with petrol, the attendant informed us that the card machine was "off line", we asked him to try as we were leaving for our other destination, he tried a few times and eventually he was successful
