I'm one of those 'moody' guys.....

Some time I like to see CATS.... next day I'd like to enjoy scenery, next day I go for the sounds...etc etc.

So to me 'best' is qualified to:

Best game viewing: probably Croc-Bridge, Lower-Sabie, Skukuza area. Maybe Satara - Orpen as well?
Best sounds: the quiet roads like the s36, s37...beautiful waterholes like 'Sonop'
Best scenery: definately the Shingwedzi area, the s56 Mphongolo loop, Mahonie loop etc

Not trying to kill your topic, but the longer I visit Kruger, the more I see, the more I realize (TO ME PERSONALLY) there is no 'best' area.

@ the right place @ the right time @nd in the right mood

Best place in Kruger to see animals IMHO is Skukuza, but in whole of Kruger, it's the 'worst' to be  Nevertheless didn't directly answered the question. :? If I had to choose THE BEST place to be in Kruger is on the Olifants Backpack Trail, right next to the river deep in the wilderness

Correct G@mespotter.

Best - for what???

It is a very vague subject.

Birding - Pafuri area
Solitude & scenery -North of Shing
Spectacular hilltop river view - Olifants
Basic big 5 - CB-Skuk.

I would say the Balule/Olifants area does it for me. The beautiful riverine next to Balule gives me a sense of ...Psalm 23. The Timbavati Road also is a favourite on my list.

Any interesting scenery for me is the best place to be in Kruger   . Usually I Love the roads along river or water courses because they are greener. Also can find almost anything interesting

I have not seen a large enough area in Kruger to be an expert.
I have been to
Punda Maria oncefor a weekend
Skukuza twice for a weekend each time
Satara for three days
Letaba for three days

If you are one for beautiful scenery, the Olifants mountanious area is certainly a winner. Moreover, if you want to see large herds and cats, it is a short drive into the Satara area from Olifants. The balule area south of Olifants is also great for game. Olifants is also close to Letaba where the roads are quiet and the mopani is plentiful.

So Olifants provides for 3 types of people.
1. Beautiful scenery
2. Game south of Olifants camp
3. Peace north of Olifants camp

Hi All
For me it is Satara then Satara en then again Satara
You can see quite far , not a lot off cars no or next to nothing day visitors day and lots off great roads to travel . All off Bush Baptist's favourites are to be seen. Even if you are quite a few vehicles at a sigthing it is open enough so that you don't crowb each other. Down south you have to watch everybody ele to make sure they do'nt drive into you. I think the big 5 shloud include a black rhino and not the white rhino. I was in Berg en Dal and surroundings Thursday and Friday and saw more white rhinos than buffalo , elephant , wildebeest , kudu and zebra put together.

I agree with you sky
If your primary objective is game viewing, Satara is paradise! And for birders, raptors paradise!

The north, the north, the north - away from the people and traffic jams; beautiful scenery, wonderful birds and all of Africa straight in front of you! Where I will this time next week - Nyalaland Trail

I agree with you about the blackie & big 5 sky, but then the jeep jockeys would hardly eve get tips, because blackies are very shy in the daytime.
I have never seen one in Kruger.
:hmz: Better add it to the wishlist thread.

I noticed that the loop roads around Berg-en-Dal area were not mentioned... we only took this trip once and unfortunately did not see much wild life, but the scenery ... WOW! I love the mountains and the best part was that we did not spot a single soul on those roads 8) Not that I don't like sharing, but sometimes it's just nice to have it all to yourself

Another very special place is the Orpen Dam near Tshokwane. Apart from being a great view point, it is the sort of place where everyone greets you and takes the time to ask you about your day :)

The only other place that I will mention here is Punda Maria. The restaurant area includes tables under the trees which at dinner creates a very special mood. Their restaurant staff were also fantastic when we went there last October

Although I loved KNP North, the elephants became annoying - yes, I love Ellies, but preferably from a distance. Does anyone know why the elephants here are so quick to charge? I know that they are generally temperamental , but they seem to be extra bad-tempered up there
