I am sure no one was complaining Rooies, it was just a question out of interest.

I have never seen anyone ridiculed for any lack of English when posting and hope I never would. :naughty:

Wow, I certainly didn't expect such a rich series of replies from my query. I have learned a lot! Thank you everyone.

I must just say that I wasn't making the query with the intent of ridiculing anyone (except perhaps how Europeans seem to love the word 'safari' as a catch-all for *anything* to do with Africa + Wildlife :roll: ) or suggesting that there is a wrong or right way of communicating in this forum. Far from it. I am always astounded at how well second language speakers are able to express themselves here. (Certainly far more competently than I ever could in Afrikaans!) I was just curious as to why I automatically used the singular as I don't remember ever having being taught that and had never given it much thought until it was pointed out to me!

No longer so - in some cases they occur on lunch or dinner plates in SA.

But … if a person see for example more than one Eland or more than one Duiker I think it remains: “I saw Eland or Duiker” as there is no plural in English for these animal names :hmz: .

Googled this

selected 5 of the larger search engines and typed in my two alternatives: ‘mongooses’ or ‘mongeese’. I then jotted down the number of hits for each.

When I asked Google:
Mongooses = 804 000 hits
Mongeese = 103 000 hits

When I asked Yahoo:
Mongooses = 631 000 hits
Mongeese = 55 800 hits

When I asked Bing:
Mongooses = 543 000 hits
Mongeese = 47 900 hits

When I asked Lycos:
Mongooses = 626 000 hits
Mongeese = 58 800

When I asked Ixquick:
Mongooses = 7082 hits
Mongeese = 3380 hits

The results seem to speak for themselves. 100 % of the time mongooses wins!
Even as I type this post the computer screams at me, highlighting every time I write ‘Moongeese’, saying that I need to check my spellcheck!
I guess that I will use that as a sign.

Your research method is flawed Elsa :wink:

for 'mogooses' hits will contain hits for 'mongoose' as it is contained in the word 'mongooses'.
So even if it it were mongeese, mongoose would get more hits :hmz:
Pluse it is possible that misconception is greater than the knowledge of the correct term :hmz:

But according to the dictionary, it is
1 mongoose
many mongooses

By the way Roois, I love your input "1 hippo, 10 hippies" :D
