To me; when mentioning a species the singular eg Lion or Elephant or Rhinoceros should be used.

When referring to a single animal the above should apply.

When referring to more than one then the plural eg Lions, Elephants or whatever should be used.

However this is not a linguistic training centre, if you are in doubt, use as you prefer, the readers will understand very clearly what is meant.

Enjoy KRUGER, only nine more days for me and we hopefully will be listening to the Woodland Kingfishers and the Guinea Fowl and the Francolin.

Hopefully we will see many Sable, Roan, Kudu, Elephant, Buffalo, and some Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Steenbokkies and of all the others. :D

I don't mind if you say elephant or elephants as long as you don't do as my brother in law from the UK did and say " look at the elephants in the POND" when refering to the Sabie River or call every single different species of buck/antelope a generic "DEER "

I was under the impression that I was the only person in the KNP history to be with a group of Yanks who sighted Deer in the Park. :)

And the ubiquitous "Waterhawg", and "Water Buffalo.."

Americans seem obsessed with water... :hmz:

Why all the fuzz? A famous Afrikaans writer, CJ Langenhoven, once said, ""n Goeie begryper het net 'n halwe woord nodig" (Roughly translated "A good understander only needs half a word"

Those of you who are complaining about the correct use of English on this forum, are actually scaring away those folks who are not fully conversant with the English language, and are afraid to post something, because they are afraid that the purists may frown on them.

A lot of people, including me, are making a lot of mistakes when using the English language, but I always look past the mistakes and try to figure out what this person is trying to say. And that is the crux of the whole matter.

Interesting point, Rooies, and I suppose I am one of the culprits! I don't agree that a significant number of potential posters are subject to this fear, though, and I suspect it's just us old farts/perfectionists who really give a damn!

On the other hand, SOME semblance of readability is surely necessary! (I can go and find some SA posts that are virtually incomprehensible, (NOT overseas ones!), so maybe it's ok until spell-check is brought back?

Wouldn't worry too much!

I am sure no one was complaining Rooies, it was just a question out of interest.

I have never seen anyone ridiculed for any lack of English when posting and hope I never would. :naughty:

The only time I frown is when the sun is shining in my eyes and also when in the Park and I am clouded in dust or by the noise of a speedster and then when my time is up and I have to return to Vereeniging.

Very many year ago while the Afrikqaans language was developing there was a rule "skryf soos jy praat", meaning "write as you talk". Even if you make an error; those that need to - will understand.

Please share your feelings and of course your experiences.

A few years ago we went to Kruger and in the party was a lady who wasn't quite with it. My children asked out of politeness what she had seen. She was a Saffie and said 'Some deer'. I could not check the children's accurate pampooning afterwards as I nearly wet myself with laughter.
