Get woken up by the SO always with mutterings about getting the flask and "granny biscuits" ready and to hurry or we will miss the animals ...oh for just one morning to lie in but it never happens .. its up up up or life is not work living for the rest of the day.
THose foreign folk . Rusks are extremely easy to make I have a buttermilk recipe somewhere must look for it They are made with buttermilk Selraising flour, marg or butter and other thingies can be added such as mixed fruit aniseed to have variety Delicious dunked in condensed milk coffee !!!!

It looks like we all have more or less the same routine. I am usually the first one up, and thus the one who makes the coffee. After the kettle is started, I quickly walk to the fence to see what's on the other side. Back at the tent/bungalow, I make coffee for everyone and then I go and sit next to the previous night's fire, which I have restarted, with a cuppa and Ouma buttermilk rusks.

By this time most visitors are up and getting ready for the day, but nobody speaks loudly, just muffled voices, as if they have respect for other people who are sleeping late. People walk to and from their cars, packing for the day, but everybody is still quiet.

Then the first diesel engine gets started, with the normal clutter of diesel engine, and suddenly everybody realizes that the quietness of the night is now over, and starts talking louder, even slamming doors shut.

Then it's time to pack all the goodies for the day, my favourite being cold steak sandwiches with hot English mustard. A coolbox with beers and cool drinks and a picnic basket with all the food stuff get loaded and it's off to the nearest picnic spot. I personally don't like to sit in the car and drink coffee, because of a nasty experience many years ago. We stopped under a fig tree next to the Sabie river and my SO begun pouring steaming hot coffee into a mug. Just then a large elephant bull made his appearance about 5 metres from us, on my SO's side. She got such a fright that she threw the flask at me, with the content spilling on my....(you know what)
It was very eina.

I am embarrassed to admit I wake up begging to be allowed to sleep in with my child next to my bed with a jug of water. He threatens to pour the water if I do not get up. Part of the jug has been known to be used. No time to have coffee and rusks. But he has always made mugs of coffee which somehow make it to the car which makes it to the gate before the gate opens.

Another year and you wont be worrying about the water but more listening to your car starting up.

My alarm goes, I wake SO and get her up, she goes to shower etc and on her way back from ablutions she brings boiling water from kitchen. We then sit and have a cuppa coffee, then quick run through ablutions for me while SO cleans up and washes mugs, then pack car with foods that needed to be in fridge as rest was packed night before.


Could probably save time by getting a resealable jar and getting SO to keep her teeth in there, then she could brush them while we drive or at first waterhole we stop at.

I am one of the Kruger Koffie Klan too.
Wake up just before dawn, put the kettle one and go for a smoke.
Water boils and I pour myself a cup of Nescafe.
Slowly the rest of the clan starts moving and we all sit down to have a nice breakfast.
We never race to get out of the gate as we are on holiday and our lives are hectic enough normally we just generally take it easy.

A few smokes and coffee's later it is time to pack up and get out into the wild with two thermos flasks filled to the brim that will be empty just before 10am.

DinkyBird - you started this thread and it has received such a positive response. Can I suggest that someone (you?) (I don't know how - bit of a novice) start a thread on how we addicts of the flask and rusks end our day? It may be interesting to see if, like most KNP enthusiasts, we have plenty in common. I follow a very set pattern unlike my free attitude to how I approach each morning. Keep well all.

Great idea pnm, but that could turn out to be a bit of a "bar" thread.
